A friend and I are going on a road trip to Alaska (from Canada) in a few weeks. Aside from the trip to and from Alaska we will end up with about 10 days to spend inside the state. We are going to be basically backpacking - either tenting or sleeping in the vehicle for the most part. We have no concrete plans at all as far as an itinerary, we're just going to be playing it by ear. For the most part we're anticipating doing a lot of enjoying nature (sightseeing, hiking/camping, fishing, etc). By looking at the map we're kinda planning to stay in the triangle between Tok, Anchorage, and Fairbanks unless we find something really amazing that's farther North/West.
So I'm wondering if anybody has any recommendations of interesting places to go and things to see? We definitely are going to look into some kind of glacier-viewing tour from Anchorage and are thinking about looking into white water rafting, 4x4 tours/trips, hiking in Denali park, etc. but don't have any concrete plans. I'd specifically love some good fishing advice, as we have every intention of getting a fishing license and trying to find some good fishing along the way.
Aside from point of interest recommendations, I also have a few questions:
1) If I bring a laptop what're the chances we will be able to snatch free internet along the way? Is it common for libraries or coffee shops or something to have free wireless?
2) How plentiful is diesel up there? Should we bring a few jerry cans with us or can we count on finding a diesel station in most decent-sized towns along the way?
And lastly, we're going to be passing through the Yukon (Whitehorse) on the way and are wondering if it's worth it to check out Dawson City. It looks like it's pretty far out of the way and I'm not sure if it's going to be worth the time rather than driving straight from Whitehorse along Hwy 1. Has anybody been there? What'd you think? Would you want to spend a day of your 10 day trip to visit it?
