PC + Mac + Wireless = Arrgh!

Hey PA,
So my wife and I have had PCs for a long time, both set up with wireless (Belkin router and wireless cards) using a 128 bit WEP encryption key. She recently bought a mac laptop, and has been unable to connect to the router. We've tried everything on this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1126 and none of it has worked. If I disable the security, we can both connect fine. While this works, it's clearly less than desirable.

Any suggestions?

What other encryption options are there? I run WPA2/PSK (AES) and I have no problems with my Macbook.

I don't remember what the options are, I'll check when I get home from work.

Yeah I thought WEP was just supposed to be a bad idea anyway.

I have, on occasion, had problems with the length requirements for WEP keys and router and wireless card driver behavior when dealing with keys of irregular length. For example, a friend of mine has a wireless network with a 4-character WEP key, and my MacBook Pro can connect in OS X, but not in Windows since the WEP key is actually 5 characters and OS X is sending one character for the 5th and XP is sending another.

(At least I think that's what it was. Bottom line is, don't use WEP, and if you do make sure your key is of the proper length.)

This has hit a temporary snag while I try and find the password to the router 0.o. I'll update this when I can. Thanks for the suggestions.

Just reset your router. It should default to "Admin" as the user and nothing as the password (also possibly "admin").

When I got my Mac I had a similar problem as your wife. The issue ended up being that I was selecting the wrong encryption when being prompted.
