So i'm pulling into my parking pad, and the jackass garbage men have thrown my garbage can/lid hither and yon. I can get by it in my SUV so i take the turn a bit tight watching for the can. a bit too tight. SCCCRAAAAPEEEE. Against a plank of my wooden fence. It doesn't look too bad, though it is over a fairly wide area. If i rub it with my finger, it's barely noticible. Yes i know i'm an idiot, but what i'm wondering is, would simple polish buff these out? that crap i see occasionally on infomercials? Anybody have a good experience getting out some superficial scratches from car finish? should i just pay to get it detailed?

Can you see metal or feel the scratch with your finger? From my experience, it's pretty tricky to get anything more than "spiderweb" lines out via polish. And that crap on TV won't help I'd say. If you're set on doing it yourself, I'd suggest picking up a Porter Cable rotary buffer and polish. They're pretty awesome, and will do a lot to help as long as it isn't too deep. A professional detailer with an orbital buffer might be able to help as well, though it may cost you a hundred dollars or so.

Pics would help determine for sure.

A deep scratch isn't going to polish out.

Drag your fingernail over the discoloration, if it doesn´t catch you can buff that out with wax (I like carnauba paste wax).

Even if it does catch, you can drastically reduce the appearrance (possibly eliminate it) with a couple coats of wax.

Best way: wash area with dawn-type dish soap; use claybar to remove surface contaminants; apply wax, let it haze for 30 seconds, buff off; repeat the waxing until you're satisfied.

Edit: I've seen people wetsand and get some pretty deep scrathes out. I'm a little afraid to do this myself though.
