Ok, so recently I was gifted by my cousin a Japanese Wii (I was in China at the time). Now that I'm back in the states I realize that this won't work at all because it is a Japanese Wii... Do any of you know a way I can trade this in for an American Wii? I've already tried calling Nintendo and they told me to ask Gamestop who said no.
I was thinking I could try returning it to a store or something saying it was broken and try to swap them out... but I don't know if I'll get in trouble for this or something...

couldn't hurt to try. worst they could say was no.
1) Go to Wal-Mart/K-Mart (not Target/Gamestop, they might actually test it)
2) Buy a Wii
3) Swap out the Wii's
4) Return the Japanese Wii
5) Profit? You might only be able to get store credit but I'm sure you'll use that in a reasonable amount of time. If not there are sites to sell/trade gift cards.
So you're suggesting he commit refund fraud. Classy.
Well hold on just a moment here, a Japanese Wii is a pretty cool thing. You get access to the much superior Japanese Virtual Console, and you can also play Japanese Wii and GCN games. I'd trade you myself if I didn't already have so many American Wii games.

Plus just about every retailer records the serial number when you purchase something like a console and checks to make sure you are returning the console with the same serial number.
Hack it for homebrew? Takes about ten minutes of work to get an American Wii to play Japanese games, I'd imagine it'd work just as well the other way around.
