Best Buy Announces Price Matching New Games of Competitors Used Titles
Either way if this comes to Canada, I know where I'll be shopping!
From what I understand it's US only right now in select test markets. If it goes national it will be a victory for all of us as lower prices can be the only result.
They need to be driven out of business. This exclusive content crap is getting out of hand. At first it was toy gimmicks. Then it was exclusive in-game skins and fluff. Now they are getting real game content such as maps and levels and even characters, which hurts the gaming community by dividing us into the have and have nots and creating situations where people are actually hurt by where they buy their game.
Sounds like a trial balloon, unless Best Buy has already implemented it.
Anything to fuck over Gamestop is OK in my book. As long as you're not bombing innocent civilians and casualties only occur to the greedy fucks, then it was their time.
EDIT:
I hope it's not a situation where you have to argue with some Best Buy douchebag that Gamestop is indeed selling Super Mario Galaxy 2 for $55.99
Uhm, how will they handle the actual price matching? Gamestop doesn't usually advertise their used prices for game titles. I guess their online listing?

Why would Galaxy be over $50 anyway?

Because I'm ignorant and I haven't bought a retail game in months.

Walk into a Gamestop, take a picture of the game with the price tag with your cell phone, and then show it at the Customer Service desk at Best Buy? I've done this before with games they sell at Costco because I want to save a few bucks and build up reward zone points.
That said, this isn't a huge deal. Best Buy's selection blows. This deal will typically amount to five dollars off new releases.
It's a big deal because it will effectively bring down prices period, especially if the two start to actively compete against each other.
5 dollars off every new release? I would shop at Best Buy exclusively if it saved me 5 bucks every time I buy a new release. Especially since I'd be getting the game new rather than a used copy.
At one point up here in Toronto Best Buy and Future Shop always put new releases on sale, 10 dollars off for the first week. I shopped at them exclusively for about a year while they did that and it hurt the smaller shops badly.
Price matching at best buy is stupid easy. Basically, you say you saw something somewhere for whatever amount. I go to customer service and have the operator call the store, and confirm what the price is. I can't imagine them doing this for every single customer buying a game, though.
Also there is another requirement for price matching. The competing store must have the item in stock. Not sure how that will pan out for this deal.
This is likely some market testing in select locations and they may or may not end up doing this.
But it's not like an official "announcement" that BB is going to start pricematching new to used stuff everywhere from now on.
Let's not forget that Best Buy also bought and sold their own Used games in select markets a few years ago, and that never went national nor permanent. This may or may not either... But either way, it's still a long ways off from actually becoming policy.

You are right. BB does this stuff all the time.
Our store is selling calibrations at 100 dollars less than the other ones, and we've sold more now than we have in a long time. And for a while we were just giving away free installs. The wacky thing is that most people didn't want them, so it never stuck.
orly? I was thinking this, if for real, would only come to some strange faraway land like Las Vegas or San Francisco (t-mobile certainly follows this trend for my area.. no 3g love) but it turns out this specific sign was pictured in West Jordan, Utah. South Salt Lake City really isn't what I would call an experimental market (inb4 religious discussion, jokes) but thats only 30min from me!
Yeah but the only reason i buy used games at gamestop is because you have 7 days to return it if you end up not enjoying the game.
Bah this worn hurt us...errr, i mean gamestop. Best buy will most likely only have the new stuff available where game stop does not make most of their money off the brand new titles, just the ps2 games we.. err, i mean they buy from people at $7 and jack up to $25
Woo, that's a best buy near me. I wonder if the one down the street has that too.
If not, west jordan only like a 15 minute drive. I'd totally make that to save some cash.
And yeah, BB doesn't always have the best selection of games, but they virtually always have a good stock of new and recent releases. I wonder if you can get the prices on orders of games they don't have in stock.
I should check on my way into work tomorrow and see.
I buy most of my games at either BB or Amazon already anyway, when I buy new releases, so it won't change much for me; but that's still cool. I don't loathe Gamestop/crazy like some folks but I do dislike them and don't bother going into them unless I need something very specific.
We'll see what actual effect this has I suppose.
All the Gamestops and Gamecrazy's near me seem on their last leg anyway. Anytime I've ever gone in I'm either the only one in the store or there's just little kids playing on the kiosks. Gamecrazys never even have customers at all. If this is the nail on those coffins, oh well. No loss.
Update: Our Orem, Utah store did not have a sign like this (though I didn't want to deal with OMGSERVICEPLAN and ask someone.) Possibly because there is a Play N Trade visible from the front door, and a Gamestop in the mall a block to the East.
Seriously, they never have anything in stock; the layout is shite, ugh. I was so happy when they finally built the one in AF so I didn't have to drive to sandy or west jordan anytime I wanted something from BB.

College towns... wait make that two Universities, four tech schools, and three salons. Town is so bad they had to move the most iconic college food joint down the street and rename it. Still got food poisoning from it last month. Oh, and the Wal Mart down the street is the scariest place ever.

Sure saved me a trip
Didn't figure there'd be two guys here from Provo/Orem, let alone someone that works at the Orem BB
aack no way do I work there, I just pass it on my way home!
(forgive me for overposting in this thread)
to continue discussion, and I'm sure the answer is no, but I wonder if stores can be schenived into doing this for hardware and peripherals [sneakyface]

This can't be really real? Edit: Now to find out which markets.

It's just a couple stores so far, but damn, what an aggressive move.

I was wondering that too

Best Buy didn't "announce" anything...

Wonder if they have a Steel Battalion...
There needs to be a list of more places this is happening.
