[PRIME] PAX '09 PC Tournaments: Rules & Info

ghrogghrog Registered User regular
edited September 2009 in PAX Archive
*Note that all information in this thread is subject to change between now and September 3rd*

This thread is for rules, registration guidelines, updates, schedules, and questions regarding PC tournaments ONLY. This thread will NOT cover BYOC activities, console freeplay, console tournament, or any other events, including handheld, tabletop, etc.

Schedule
Friday, September 4th
noon - 5:00pm Call of Duty 4 (5v5)
7:00pm - 12:00am Left 4 Dead (4v4)

Saturday, September 5th
noon - 3:00pm Team Fortress 2 (6v6)
7:00pm - 12:00am World of Warcraft (3v3)

Sunday, September 6th
11:00am - 5:00pm Demigod (3v3)

Registration
Registration for ALL PC tournaments begins on Friday, September 4th at 10am, right outside of the PC tournament area.
Only full teams will be signed up. It is your job to join and/or create a team, we're not your babysitter. It is recommended you linger around the pc tournament area at signup time, and at tournament time and your chances of joining a team will be Pretty Good.
Check-in time will begin 45 minutes prior to a tournament's starting time. Competitors are required to check-in at least 15 minutes before the tournament's start time. If you/your team doesn't check in during this time, your spot will be opened for another person/team.

General Information
All tournaments will be exclusively using tournament computers provided by Intel. You will be allowed to bring over your mice and keyboards and customize your configurations, you will not be allowed to load software of any kind.
If you sign up for a tournament, please be there. If you decide you will be unable to, check in with us and let us know so we can open up a spot for someone else.
As a general rule, it's a good idea to show up at least 20 minutes in advance of each tournament, and that will give you time to configure your settings and warm up before the tournament begins.
We should be able to sit teams next together for the most part, but in cases where we can't, Ventrilo servers will be available. Feel free to ask if you'd like one and we'll provide you with password information.
In team games, please take care in choosing a team captain. Pick someone responsible. Being tall or otherwise easily found in crowd can also help.

Those are standard competitive maps that CEVO, TGL, and a few others use.

Maps will be selected at the tournament admin's discretion for each round.

Yeah, but this is PAX. It's a 3 hour tournament and 1h40m of that is gametime, 5 rounds at 20 minutes. With delays for setup and organization it will probably be a close thing to fit everything in.

One versus match with all 5 maps take like an hour. If the first round takes exactly zero minutes and the next 5 rounds take an hour each (which they probably will) then 7 to 12 isn't enough time.

Is only the first round 3 maps, or the first few rounds?

I can be on anyone's team, for all tournaments other than WoW (no idea how to play, never had before, will suck) and DemiGod (same). I can still try, but I know I will not do well in those two. I have never played COD 4 or L4D on a PC, but I have much experience with those games on Xbox 360 and I am very experienced with TF2, especially as a medic.

PM me if you want someone like me on your team.

This depends on how things are looking after the first round. I'd expect the first two round to be only the first three maps . . . Or the second round being the first four maps, with just the finale getting skipped.

It really depends on where we stand on time after the first round. LOL I guess I could've just explained that in the OP. :]

Apologies if this has already been answered:

I'd like to play in the WoW tournament, but only have a one-day PAX pass for Saturday. Since registration for the PC tourneys is on Friday, will I need to buy a ticket for Friday just to register?

    Thanks!

P.S. If one person is looking to join a team, let me know! We need a third.

PCT Desk won't be in public space. We'll keep 5-10 slots open for the day-of the tournament. Just show up really fucking early on Saturday to insure you get a spot.

For the TF2 tournament the map list is good overall but there is a problem with playing cp_gravelpit. It has to be played in stopwatch mode to be played competitively which doesn't really work with a fixed time limit, particularly a time limit of only 20 minutes. Although I love playing the map, I don't think it will work very will with the tournament structure.

TF2 Question. If registration is on Friday for the teams, does the whole team need to be present to register? Or can 1 person register the entire team? Some of us are showing up at different times.

I realize at the start of the event when teams are checked in everyone will need to be present, im simple tallking about Friday registration.

Same rules apply to the WoW 3v3?

    Thanks.
