FPS sickness

I did a three hour block with Killzone 2 tonight and i'm feeling insanely sick. I think this is due to the FPS setting, how do you get over it ? I played through uncharted last night and it was fine, but I really feel like hurling now.

Stop playing video games for a while. In a day or two when you start again remember to take a break every hour or so.

It is almost certainly motion sickness. I guess you could take Dramamine if you have some. This always happened to me when I played Duke Nukem 3d back in the day. Is there any way you can up the framerate to make it smoother?

You might want to lower your brightness as well

My dad has the same, can't play shooters without getting sick. It seems you dont have it as bad as him, though. Otherwise you would have noticed this way earlier. I guess not playing for 3 hours at a time would help. Take some distance from your screen helps too.

Just take a break every once in a while.

One of my buddies is sadly unable to play any Source games because of motion sickness. He can play Call of Duty all day, but as soon as HL2 or L4D starts being played he feels nausea. Poor guy :(

Quick question. Do you have some sort of eye 'thing'? Dryness, prescription, etc?

No other FPS I've ever played made me ill, but Killzone 2 for any length of time does the exact same thing to me, in addition to a raging headache. o_O

I think I read somewhere that the arc of vision the game gives you plays a role in this. IRL you can see in an arc of like 90° in front of you. In games it's usually much less. Especially HL2 was guilty of that, you could only see in an arc of like 30° in front of you.

Don't really have any sources on this, though. :(

Of course camera movements also play a role, games like Quake where you're twitching about with the camera lot will make you sick much quicker than a slower shooter.

Regarding the poor guy who can't play HL2, the problem is indeed the viewing angle. Most FPS are at 90 degrees, which is fine, HL2 default is 75. This can be changed with a console command, I highly recommend trying that out.

As for the OPs Killzone problem, it's partly the game. I never get motion sickness from games, and I've been playing FPS' my entire life. Killzone gave me motion sickness. I found I had to move back from the TV a bit, the distance helped a lot, just something with that game. Also, take a break every 30 minutes, walk around your house for a minute or two and come back to the game.

What also helps me is to make sure the room is well lit. A dark room with a FPS going always fucks me up. If the lights are on and the room is somewhat cool, I can play a bit longer.

I'm pretty insanely susceptible to feeling nauseous when playing FPS's. The only way I've found to counteract this is to gradually adapt. Play it until you just start feeling nauseous, then stop, take a break of at least an hour. Do it again and stop again when you just start feeling nauseous. Gradually, it will take longer for it to happen and you'll be able to play for longer stretches at a time.

The downside of this is that if you stop playing them for a while, you'll have to go through this whole acclimatization process again or you'll end up retching into a bucket.
