Flipnote Studio: Free DSiWare animation app (aka "Animated Cock Studio") out now!

What is Flipnote Studio?

Known as Moving Memo and a bevy of other names, Flipnote Studio is a free DsiWare app that lets you easily create animations by drawing pictures or words, using photos from your DSi camera, adding sound to them and then sharing those creations with friends or post them on the Internet. Here's a quick guide on the official site. It's been out in Japan for quite a while, was just released in North America today and is slated for European release later this week.

It was developed by Nintendo EAD, and it shows: The entire interface is easy and streamlined, and within seconds you'll be doodling giant cocks and learning how to animate them violating each other. Here's my first animation, which took me about 5 minutes to draw and figure out how to post. You can edit to your heart's content, and from there you can post your creation online to the companion website, Flipnote Hatena. It's a YouTube-ish site accessible from any Web browser, as well as natively in Flipbook Studio, where you can view everyone's creations, rate them and leave comments.

How do I maek post?

Here's how to post your animations online: Once you have a note saved, you have to create a Hatena ID (this can be done from within Flipnote Studio). From them, browse to a category, click "Description," and then click "Post."

How detailed can you get?

How detailed do you want to be? Here's some cool examples:

Ugomemo

Chaingun

"When the Throat is Dry..." by Willkun

Who can I share my animated cocks with?

Us! I'll make links to people's main pages here. You can also generate a "Friends List" from within Flipnote Studio, but I haven't figured that part out yet.

    OH MY GOD.

I've been waiting for this for a long time! It's one of the biggest reasons I wanted the DSi. Hopefully I'll have time to make some stuff!

I just showed my little sis and she is all excited and wants to do claymation now.

I deman, DEMAND this get's un-released and saved until I can afford such a fuck awesome toy. I used to play the shit out of my gameboy camera as a kid.

It's a little counterintuitive: You have to choose a category first, then click "Description," then click "Post."

Also, I found out you have the option to save animations as GIF files on your SD card, but from there you have to offload them manually. I wish I could just upload the GIF and post that places, but alas.

    Obviously you can't do photos.

This seems overly complicated, and yet simple enough to be a big app for the DSi.

I went to all the trouble of posting them on Hatena before I realized this, one minute...

So you draw each frame, or what?

Generally yes, but there are a lot of tools to make that easier. You can insert frames and duplicate them so you don't have to redraw things that stay still. You can see that I used this on Pacman's head, and I erased the mouth part of his circle on each frame to draw in the mouth. You can also use that to loop an animation two or three times and add details, like a simple run with things flying past in the background.

Besides just duplicating frames you can do a regular copy/paste with selection lasso. There are two drawing layers so you can erase the background while leaving your subject untouched. It's surprisingly full featured, though I couldn't find a button mapped undo which is a little annoying (have to push menu, click undo).

It also has a feature commonly known as "onion skinning," here called lightbox, where you can see previous animation frames and/or future animation frames in a faded out look so that you can move the relevant parts of your drawing smoothly.

Nope. It's DLC only, and uses the built in photo and sound programs on the DSi to make animations as well. It also uses the SD card so you can save them as GIFs, and the regular DS doesn't have an SD slot. It wouldn't be impossible to put it on the regular DS but it would lose a lot of features and it doesn't look like they have plans to port it there in any case.

You know what, I probably still won't get a DSi. I can find a 360 arcade bundle cheaper than the DSi here. D:

As a GIF tool though this looks really sweet.

This is so much fun to mess around with. I totally wouldn't have paid money for this, since I'm not normally into these kinds of things, but since it's free I've been tinkering with it quite a bit.

    Some tips from GAF:
    In drawing mode:
Hold L and drag to move the current page around
    Press B to switch layers
Press A to cycle through tools
Press X to clear the current page (not positive, but it seems to be what it does)
Hold Y and press Left to Undo, Right to Redo
Hold Select and drag to draw straight lines
Hold Start and drag to draw vertical and horizontal lines

    Getting sprites in your animations:
I think this is how people do it, I've only tested a little and it seemed to work well enough.
Load up your sprite on your PC
    Make it black and white
    Zoom in
Take a photo of your screen with the DSi cam. It should be really big.
Import the picture to flipnote studio
Cut out the background and hit the "resize" button until it's the right size.

Also, on the website: (not on the DSi)
In the top right corner where it says "English | Americas" click on Americas and you can set it to "English | Worldwide (All)"
This will allow you to star and favorite (as well as browse) creations from other regions. It still doesn't seem to make them show on your DSi though. I haven't found a way to do that yet.

Make sure you go into the settings and turn on the advanced features. I spend a long time wondering how to copy a selected part of an image before realizing that I was on the basic mode.

I'm still messing around with the features. I've made three short animations. They are not supposed to loop so they look a little silly as an animated gif. Nevertheless:

    002WinkandtheGun.gif

    003WoeareApples.gif

Next I'm planning on making some cartoons featuring my avatar creature, and probably a swaying Chimecho.

Actually this is really cute! Ideally, you might speed up the frames a little but it works.
