Need HTPC Application Suggestions

I've recently acquired enough bits and pieces to get a rather nice home theater PC. I've got most of it working just like I want thanks to some cool applications I've been lucky enough to stumble across. I do, however, still need to work a few kinks out.
App 1:
I have a good deal of media already on this machine. My library is mostly TV shows and movies. What application would you suggest to browse these with? I've read comparisons between Boxee, Zinc, and Hulu like this one, but they don't quite do what I want. I just want a clean UI that I can see well from the couch to find and organize my media. I don't even need a player, VLC works just fine for that. Just a nice menu system to lay on top of everything.
App 2:
This one is a bit odd, but does anybody know of an application that I can launch to throw a bunch of pretty pictures and/or visualizations on the screen. Something that doesn't have any correlation to sound. I'd very much enjoy listening to my podcasts while my television just sits there looking pretty.
Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

Once I get a more suitable HDTV, I'm planning to go the HTPC route.
