Thursday, I'm flying to Oregon to spend Christmas with a friend of mine. I'll be in Portland for a few hours but then we're driving to their house in Roseburg (3 hours south :x ).
Does anyone know of awesome things to do in the area?
If you like shopping, there's a really big outlet mall about half an hour (I think) south of Portland. I should mention that it's uncovered, though; I was there during Thanksgiving last year, and it was ridiculously cold.
Powells in Portland is a good stop, if you like books. It's huge.
QFT. Powells is an excellent place to stop by. Even walking around the park blocks/pearl district/etc. can be a lot of fun, especially if you have a camrea.
There's a Star Wars exhibit at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry in Portland that I read about, sounded pretty cool. Runs until January 1st.
There's lot's of cool breweries in Oregon if you are into that sort of thing. Deschutes in Bend, Widmer Brothers in Portland, Full Sail in Hood River, and Rogue in Newport.
There are indian casinos all over the place if you like crappy casinos.
I can tell you right now there is very, very little to do in that town. I mean.. I'm not sure about the bar scene, but I don't remember seeing many of them around in my youth or in recent years. The only things that might be interesting that I can think of are... well, there's Wildlife Safari in Winston a couple miles south, if you're interested in animals.
They, uh, also have a fish ladder.. you can watch that...
Yeah, so you're going to want to go out of town. A lot. I guess the main question is, what do you want to do with your friend while you're with him, and how long are you staying?
Your main two options for entertainment are:
Medford - 90 miles away. Where I live now. Also a little dead for a town, but I know we have a pretty decent bar scene, including a tapas bar my stepcousin just opened a little while ago. We also have an okay movie theater.. nothing too special, but it's better than the one in Roseburg. The bowling alley here (Lava Lanes) is nice, again, nothing too special but probably 10 times better than whatever bowling alley they have in Roseburg.
The city of Ashland is about 10 miles south of Medford, and it's good for artsy dudes. I dunno if there are plays running this time of the year, but we usually have some sort of Shakespearian play going on over there. It's just a fun town to walk around and explore, you never really know what you're going to find because a lot of the people in the town are ridiculous. Oh, and you can just park your car and walk around the town all you want - it's a ridiculously pedestrian-friendly town, they have the right of way at ALL times basically, so walking around is a pretty good idea there.
Eugene - 70 miles away. Probably your best bet. Having not lived here myself, I can't really tell you what there is to do there, but there are plenty of UO students/alumni on these boards that I'm sure someone can tell you cool things to do there. In all honesty, this is probably a much better option, I just can't tell you anything about it because I'm not currently living there.
That's really all I can tell you. I'm sorry to hear that you're gonna be in Roseburg, though... I mean, there's really not much to do there at all. Tell me if you find something to do there because I would be really surprised. Hope this helps.
Find a McMenamins if you can - great food. Other than that, enjoy the scenery (if it's not raining too much) and make sure you have some decently warm clothes, as its been getting below freezing lately (at least in Corvallis).
Powells is excellent. There's a Chinese garden that I love visiting right in the middle of downtown, and there's a Japanese garden out near the zoo. Several big malls. Lloyds center has an indoor ice skating rink.
Don't bother with the Woodburn outlet mall (the one localH mentioned). It's actually an hour south of Portland, and unless you're 40 or older, there's not much there worth doing.
Once you're in Roseburg, make sure to check out Video Games Plus (it's near the Dell call center and the Little Ceasers Pizza). One of the best independant video game stores I've ever been in.
Yeah, I'm really hoping we can spend more than a few hours in Portland. That book store sounds awesome, I'll have to check that out. Do they sell used books there? If so, I could stock up on the cheap. I have a feeling I'm going to be dragged to one of the casinos (Seven Feathers?) while I'm there. The only way that will be fun is if I can find a low stakes poker table. And sadly, I probably won't be drinking while I'm there. They don't drink and it would be pretty rude of me to bring it into their house. Damnit.
Matthias00, while you say Roseburg sucks, it has to be better than this shithole I live in now.

Powells is mostly used books, but they're in great condition, so you'll be in heaven. And Roseburg really is a shithole. Other than the game store I mentioned, there's the movie theater. Don't bother with the mall there.
Seven Feathers is about 45 minutes south of Roseburg and is a pretty nice casino (I worked there a couple of years ago). I don't gamble, so I don't know how low stakes "low stakes" is, but you should be able to find something to keep you occupied there.

I like poker, but I'd only want to spend like $40-$50 tops. I don't think that would last long even at the cheapest table. You know, unless I win.
And you don't understand just how shitty my town is. Mall? We don't have a mall. We have Wal-Mart.

Roseburg's "mall" is about 5 stores in the same building. I think there might be a macy's, but that's pretty much the coolest thing in there.
I mean, I'm not sure on what your current town is like, but if Roseburg seems like an upgrade on the "things to do" side of things, I truly feel sorry for you.
Seven Feathers is all right, I've never been there myself, aside from a brief stop in their convenience store/gas station. If you're into gambling, it can tide you over I guess. I would never go there myself, but I was never too big on that sort of thing anyhow.
Best thing you can do tho is have a game plan. Or at least go places your friend is familiar with. Me and a friend did some exploring in Oregon last year and lets just say there were a few towns that didnt take to kindly to my type of people.

Don't try to ford it though.

ford it... it's quicker

And do not take off your pants in the woods.
