New i7 and safe temperatures.

Appologies if a new thread is inappropriate. I considered posting in the computer build thread, but it doesn't seem to see much traffic, and I'm wary of cluttering it up with further questions.

Recently I put together a new system running on an i7 processor. It's in an EVGA x58 SLi board, and the whole thing is in an Antec Twelve Hundred case. I'm not overclocking, and I have no desire to overclock. I'm using the stock heatsink because of my own reservations about aftermarket coolers and my own inexperience installing them. The four-corner push-in cooler is about all I've ever used making systems.

Anyhow, I'm pretty concerned about the temperatures I'm seeing.

Idle: About 40-43 on all cores
Gaming (TF2, DoWII, Fear 2): ~63-68 on all cores
Intel Burn Test (on High): ~78 on all cores (Though never broke 80 at all)

I'm also running an EVGA 275 GTX, which seems to idle ~46 and sneak up to the high 60s/Low-mid 70s in game.

Are these temperatures safe? This is a big change from the C2D I used to run, so I'm worried that I'm outside of safe operating temperatures. I'm positive the case airflow is good, and I'm pretty sure that the Heatsink is seated properly, so I'm not sure what more could be done beyond an aftermarket heatsink - And I've never felt right about hanging something that weighs ~0.7 kg off of my motherboard.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

You can use that tool to find out intel's recommended temperature ceilings for your processor. [url=
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/221745-29-sticky-core-core-temperature-guide]This[/url] guide goes pretty in-depth as to what exactly that means for you. Taking a quick browse without knowing your exact processor model, it looks like they're rated to somewhere in the 68 degree celcius range... so while gaming you're at the edge, and seem to be a bit above on the burn test.

Those temperatures are okay. In fact, your i7 runs cooler than mine, and I have no issues at all.

If you exceed safe operating temperatures the computer will shut down automatically. If the heatsink wasn't installed properly the unit would overheat and shutdown quite fast.

Your temperatures really mean nothing because you didn't provide what the ambient temperature is in the room with the computer.

Is the Intel Temperature listed there the maximum safe operating temperature? I can't imagine why TJMax is set by default to 100 C if 68 C is the highest the chip should go.

I'm running the i7 920 @ 2.66 GHz, stepping D0. Ambient temperature of the room with the computer is kept at roughly 25 C. There's slight variance there, as it can get as hot as 26~27, but it usually doesn't get hotter than that.

I suppose that it might be the case that these chips just run hotter than I'm used to, and I'm worrying over nothing, but I'm not positive about that. Do you mind my asking how long you've been running your i7 Wunderbar? If you've not experienced throttling, that gives me some reassurance in the matter.

Also, I remember reading that the Intel Burn Test goes above and beyond what any game/app will do to your CPU, so I'm not sure how to interpret those temperatures.

I've been running it since May, no issues. I saw it get to 90C once (LAN party + poor air conditioning = fail), and got worried, but it never missed a beat.

You're comparing apples to oranges. The thermal spec on Intel's website deal with the case temperature, not the on-die temperature.
