Less Mining, More Shooting: Dust 514, Console FPS MMO in the EVE Universe

CCP Unveils DUST 514
Cologne, GERMANY, Game Developers Conference Europe – August 18, 2009 – CCP today revealed DUST 514™, a console-based hybrid MMO/FPS set within the EVE universe. The announcement, which included a video featuring gameplay footage, was made during a keynote address by CCP CEO Hilmar Veigar Petursson at the Game Developers Conference in Cologne, Germany.
DUST 514, featuring first-person shooter and RTS-style gameplay, will interact directly with EVE Online, CCP’s critically acclaimed flagship MMO. This interplay between the two games opens the EVE universe to console gamers and gives them a chance to become part of one of the most massive cooperative play and social experiences ever.
“We launched EVE Online in 2003 and have experienced steady annual growth– a fact we appreciate as a rarity in the world of MMOs, especially given the global economy of the past year,” said Petursson. “Our success with EVE Online has afforded us the highest caliber global design and production talent in gaming. With a team of the best minds in the industry, we conceived an ambitious new take on virtual world development with DUST 514.”
The primary gameplay of DUST 514 features brutal ground combat that takes place on the surface of planets from EVE, delivering the visceral, adrenaline-fueled experience of futuristic firefights. Developed for the current generation of consoles, DUST 514 combines equal parts battlefield reflexes and strategic planning, giving commanders and ground infantry real-time configurable weapons and modular vehicles to manage dynamic battlefield conditions.
Now entering its third year of production, DUST 514 is the primary development focus of CCP’s Shanghai studio. The team includes veteran designers of EVE Online and experienced talent from various sectors of the video game industry.
“Since opening our Shanghai studio, we have invested in building a team that wants to push the envelope in gaming and be pioneers in the industry,” said Kjartan Pierre Emilsson, Managing Director of CCP Shanghai. “Having led the design and development efforts of the project from start to finish, our studio is honored to call DUST 514 our first title release.”
Further details will be revealed at CCP’s annual Fanfest event October 1-3, 2009 in Reykjavik, Iceland.
I see some real potential here. Wars on certain planets/systems affecting trade prices of goods and services, or even the ownership of planets by different factions.
Wether this actually pans out to anything more than a Planetside clone with an EVE rebranding remains to be seen, but it has definately piqued my interest.
"DUST 514, featuring first-person shooter and RTS-style gameplay, will interact directly with EVE Online"
I wonder what they mean by directly? This could be the downfall of eve as we know it.

From what was said in the video, it seems like it will become another factor in determining sovereignty. So, EVE corps and alliances will either have people playing on each game, or will work to ally themselves with DUST corps and alliances Which, on the one hand, sounds awesome, if they can get it to work. On the other, I can already hear the outcry from some space-holding alliances who are not going to like having to work with console gamers to take and hold space.

I'd be thrilled if it is just a clone. Planetside's greatest weakness is that it's run by SoE, who can't find their own ass with both hands and a map. Nearly every change implemented by SoE seemed actively designed to make the game worse. While CCP has had its share of technical, political, and mechanical fuck-ups in the past (t20, kugutsuman, boot.ini, remote doomsdays), they do care about their players and have been steadily improving -- especially in the last year or so. If CCP can make this as fun as Planetside's early days, I look forward to playing it.

Amen to that. I absolutely loved Planetside back in the day, some of the organized ops people went on were a beauty to behold.
This is what was attempted by the people who made Warbirds 1 and 2. They had a space shooter based on real physics (dog fighting in zero g... more like fly really fast at where you think the enemy is and hope you hit before your intertia takes you few hundred thousand clicks out) and were planning to add ground combat. t got canned. The only other instance of this in a multiplayer aspect I've heard of was from he who must not be named.
I never got into EVE but I've had enough fantasies about a massive multiplayer Star Wars game where you had to invade planets that I'm definatly interested.

Damn, this looks pretty cool. Part of me hopes CCP would try to bring their PC MMO players into this new part of the EVE world, but doing so creates a raft of problems. Not only in trying to balance PC and console players in an FPS environment, but also in the lines that would be drawn between console and PC players were the seperate games to directly interact with each other.
Quite a gamble either way, but I hope as a PC guy who played EVE for years, that I could take part in this without having to buy a PS3 or Xbox.

The concept here is very ambitious to be sure. I'm in the same boat as you, since depending on how this is implemented it could very easily cause many EVE players to also want/need to buy 514 to be successful. I'm willing to wait for some more details for now, and I'd be lying if I said what they're proposing didn't excite me. The chance for failure seems pretty high, though.
I don't think so. Ambulation has been known to be in the works for a while, and from what I remember was really just a deeper version of the station menu already in the game. This looks to be a completely different experience that is linked to the EVE Sov system. Though it'd be neat if and when Ambulation is implemented, both EVE capsuleers and DUST marines could interact within it.
Here's a translation of an interview from the conference:
K: Now we need to ask further. YOu said that Events within DUST 514 will influence the Eve universe and the other way. How synced are the two worlds in detail?
CCP: Very synced, honestly. A fight on a planet taking part within DUST will have immidiate impact on the stratetic control a single Eve Player or group of players will have over this planet. And it is very simple to keep these things synced. It might have a large impact, but it is not much data that we have to transfer.
K: But this won't enable one to watch fights in DUST from within Eve and the other way?
CCP: No. In the PC game you will make offers to DUST marines. This group of mercenaries, will be in the center of DUST. The marines accept the mission, if the conditions are right and the result will be sent back and influences the gameplay of the PC game. But there won't be a Spectator camera or similar things.
K: A mission given out by a PC player is a quest for a DUST player?
CCP: We don't call it quest, but in principle: yes.
K: And between the Employer in Eve and the soldiers only money is transfered? Or are there more ways, which would mean the Eve player could support his soldiers.
CCP: Through higher values of money the player supports his soldiers more. And yes, money will be the minimum an Eve player can transfer to his soldiers.
K: And in return the Eve player get's the corresponding Sector of one planet, if his soldiers win the battle. If he owns most sectors on a planet, he will own the planet. But what does he get from that?
CCP: What can be done with the planets will be announced next year at the time our next expansion is due. This will introduce planetary control. If a player controls a certain amound of planets in one sun system, he will own the whole system. That expands our souverenity system and makes warfare within Eve more transparent and shifts it to a whole new level.
I wouldn't take all that much from that interview. There was a lot of stuff he either wasn't prepared to talk about or couldn't explain in anything more than general terms. It seems to me like they announced this at the GDC so they could talk about it at Fanfest without starting a riot.
As I was telling my friend, this has the potential to be completely awesome, or has the potential to completely wreck EVE's PVP. Given CCP's past performance I'm fairly worried.
The possibilities are awesome, though. One possibility people have already mentioned is assault lander ships that groups of EVE players will use to land Dust marines; but how much will this influence gameplay? If you land more marines then your opponent, will your marines be able to bring in more players to the match? If you bring along extra tank or small arms commodities, will your side get an advantage in equiment? Can your ships provide orbital bombardment, or your carriers send fighters down as air support?
Probably not; as awesome as it would be it would be tough to program and even harder to balance. But hopefully there will be some back and forth other than isk -> marine fight -> territory control.
I hope they add the functionality to supply our mercs with upgraded weapons, vehicles, and ammo via new BPO's and logistics.
It would be a shame if it just was "here's some isk" and the troops are magically whisked off to a round of Halo.
Still, if this turns out awesome, it might be the final reason to up and get a 360/PS3.
This, but I'm also wondering about the reverse. Will the marines provide anything other than territory capture? Someone on the goonfleet forums joked about fighting tunnel to tunnel in dysprosium mines, but I'm curious about the possibilities.

This does sound pretty badass.
Like someone else said before, if this turns out to be nothing more than a reskinned Planetside we would be so lucky.

I like the concept behind this link between games. It's actually something new, but as always who knows how the execution will be handled. Though its fun imagining the mega-corporations stabling hordes of console-marines to better ensure their victories. The fanatical eve players will do anything to hold onto that virtual space.
Ideally wouldn't this game be a sort of futuristic battlefield 1942 game that could "plug in" to the EVE universe when needed? Like sure, play your pickup battle whenever you want, but sometimes there will be a sov conflict in EVE that you can join if you are affiliated with the correct spacegangs.

greend. Like my brother with Galaxies, every time I hear someone talk about Planetside I want to resub, then I remember the condition it was left in...
The problem is, with this going to consoles, we're gonna have little halotards making inappropriate and misinformed demands: OMG THIS GUY HAS BEEN PLAYING FOR SIX YEARS AND JUST FxxxING WRECKED ME. OMG WHAT BUTTON FOR TEAM DEATHMATCH GUISE. DOOD YOU ALWAYS GET THE [equipment]! FAGFAGFAGFAGFAG (this last bit is already in, actually)

I'm hoping there will be like 2 or more modes.
The first being the live game, missions that have been set by corps each with 1 or more objectives that have set rewards. The second or other being still online but more like you mentioned, standard missions that you can jump in and out of. Could use these to earn yourself cash to buy upgrades and new weapons etc.
oh, that's another thought. Maybe it could work sort of like the mechwarrior mercenaries games, where the FPS players take jobs to earn money to buy better gear (and hookers and blow), only it's the spacenerds setting the contracts

My guess is that the largest portion of the Dust matches will occur on empire planets, and sorta be part of factional warfare. Then, much like actual eve, it will be the organized dust merc corps who fight the battles on 0.0 planets.
Or the ships made from [strike]magic and pixie dust[/strike]"Puppeteer Technology" in Ringworld. Both completely transparant AND invulnerable to everything!

I wonder when it's planned to come out, given it's been in the works for 3 years.
It looks as if it could be ingame, although it has a whiff of Killzone 2 preview about it.

While the announcement focuses on consoles, I don't see anything that excludes a PC release. They haven't even specified any platforms.
Well the beginning of the press video specifies 360 and PS3.
I wonder what they mean by directly? This could be the downfall of eve as we know it.
That's a video recorded by these golem.de people. Sometimes people assume things. I don't see any actual announcement of platforms.
