For both the OP and Tara. Abnormally shitty luck. Did you punch a crate of puppies at some point in your life to garner this kind of karma?

I'm still on my launch Xbox 360 (3+ years, no warranty). My used PS3 hasn't died yet. So all in all, I'm very happy. I want to say this is for all the good karma I racked up when I went through 3 dead PS2s in about 4 years and didn't kill anyone at Sony.
The last system I had die on me was my PS2 via the infamous DRE, just after Contra: Shattered Soldier came out. Got it repaired and it still works today.
I've had my Wii since launch, my 360 for over a year and my PS3 since April. Hopefully the 360 stays alive.
My Wii went a month ago after a power outage. it wouldn't turn on at all. I left it unplugged for a day with out electricity and when I tried again it came back up. Something about its fuse keeping it safe and then resetting. So try that

My Wii wouldn't turn on the other day... I decided to try plugging it into the wall instead of into the surge protector... what could it hurt? The Wii fired right up. I perused the owners manual... and it says you're not supposed to plug it into a surge protector at all... oh.

The fuck? What would it say that? What page?
I'm pretty sure any manual detailing the Wii Remote also says not to use rechargable batteries. Take a guess what batteries I'm using.
This stuff just doesn't make any sense.
Anyway, to get back on topic, I would also suggest to try unplugging the power cord for a while and then trying again. It can't hurt, right?

Heh, my Wii started giving me a black screen for a split second randomly. I did some research, and apparently I managed to pick the component cable that sucks (Joytech), and it is whats causing my problems. Might just go buy an official Wii one or go back to the cables it came with.
I ask because I've seen my friend's media center setup. He has so much electronic shit jammed closely together that there's no way in hell for airflow to get in or around his Wii or 360. The Wii is jammed between the wall of the media center and a huge receiver and jammed up against the shelf above. The 360 is jammed between the other wall and other side of the received and shelf.
Both of these systems died due to heat related issues because of this.
Dasnoob, chances are it was a manufacturing error that caused the problem. They happen with a few units for all consoles and since consoles are more complex than they were in the previous generations, there more of a chance of things going wrong.
Don't worry, Nintendo has a 1 year warranty for the Wii so you're covered for repairs/replacements.
2) I've had a Wii for 6 months. Today it decided it didn't feel like turning on anymore.
ITT we discuss why my luck is shit.
Actually I think your luck balances out
I was going to say, his luck is great. His 360 has never died and his Wii is still under warranty. And he has access to a forum to vent about such things!
It might just be the power brick had tripped, it has it's own surge protection built in. Try unplugging the power brick for at least 5 minutes, then plug it back in and try again. If that doesn't work, then yeah, something's broken.
As far as I know all that happened was the power blinked while it was off. It was plugged into a surge protector. I guess I'll try plugging it in again when I get home and if it doesn't work cry to Nintendo. My wife is a bit pissed since she uses it for EA Active.

That's an interesting circumstance you are in. Your 360 works, and your Wii is having problems.
Fortunately for you Nintendo has some of the best customer service of any major company likt that. In fact a few weeks after I got my Wii, the remotes wouldn't connect to it, and Nintendo sent me a box containing a brand new Wii, as well as a box to send my broken Wii back free of charge. All this was in a two day timespan.
Mine too. All of my old consoles work. I am still wondering why my SNES turned colors.
Oh, and my Wii works just fine...because I rarely use it. Doesn't have a chance to die.
That's because those pieces of hardware don't run as hot and rely on fans (moving parts) to keep them running. Anything with a disc drive, fans, hard drives, etc is going to fail sooner than "circuit boards to circuit boards".
Yeah, don't worry too much if you have to send it back to Nintendo. They're great and responsive, and I've never heard of anybody getting crap replacement gear back from them.

This stuff just doesn't make any sense.
I think rechargeable batteries, particularly NiCds, have a lower voltage than non-rechargeables, which results in them sometimes not working in electronic devices.
First step: Unplug the console for a few minutes, then try plugging it in again. The Wii power brick has a surge protection doohickey in it that will reset if you do this.
If that doesn't work call up Nintendo, it should be a free repair as long as you didn't kick it across the room or anything.

Then I sent it to a friend of a friend who actually fixed it properly.
Now it works right.

Your SNES turned colors from oxidation.
Good news is Nintendo gave me a discount on the repair since it was close to being in warranty and their repair service was pretty quick and diligent.
