From Bethesda's website:

"A man-made floating city called the Ark, made up of hundreds of separate floating islands, is on the brink of all-out civil war. Originally built as an experimental self-sufficient and 100% “green” habitat, the reported rapid rise of the Earth’s oceans has forced the Ark to become a refuge for humanity. Crammed with the original Ark founders, their descendants, as well as tens of thousands of refugees, the Ark exists in total isolation from the rest of the world. With 25 years of social unrest, the inhabitants of the Ark have reached their breaking point. It’s up to you to decide the future of the Ark and the human race."

There's very little information I could find on the game, however I trust Bethesda as a company because of their non-MMO MMOs (Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3). The extent of the online game play is only hinted at so far, but sounds promising enough. The teaser trailer at E3 did not really impress me; at this point the only thing holding it up is the great concept and the previous work of the company (and perhaps a few screenshots). The Wikipedia article also lists the technology behind it as id Tech 4 (a la Quake Wars and to a much lesser extent Doom 3 before that). Has anyone found any other information on this game? Currently Brink and the new Eve shooter are battling in my mind for top anticipation game-wise, but I know I'm somewhat eclectic in that regard. I'm just really looking forward for a good MMO shooter.

Edge had a few paragraphs about this last month. From what I understand, it's basically a competitive online shooter, with the big innovation being a new movement system they call "SMART". This greatly simplifies the task of moving around the environment- reading your intentions and translating it into fluid movement, sort of like a FPS version of Assassin's Creed.
It seems the developers think that we'll all play more tactically if we don't have worry about the mechanics of moving around.

The other big idea seems to be the focus on storyline. Personally, I'm not really convinced that story and competitive online shooting will go together comfortably.

It's being made by Splash Damage, who dabbled in the idea of story-driven objectives in Quake Wars.

Quake Wars was a lot better than the sales and reception made it out to be. It just launched 6 months too late. If it had come out a little earlier, it would have probably been my next Battlefield. Especially with 2142 being so terrible.

Benefit of the doubt on this, confirmed. I have faith in the developer. Plus, I can see their offices from my office.

2142 wasn't terrible by any stretch of the imagination. It was basically just 2 reskinned with new vehicles some of which were cool.

It wasn't as good at the time as 2, but it wasn't a bad game.

I played 2 religiously for like 3 years. My opinion on 2142 is heavily biased.

Uh, 2142 was loads better than 2. The flying vehicles weren't so goddamn overpowered and could actually be killed (fuck those jets in 2), and the somewhat futuristic setting allowed for cool shit like mechs, deployable shields, turrets, etc. I also feel it didn't have nearly as many balance issues as 2 did though it was by no means perfect.

Is it really that hard to remember, guys? I swear, even 'mainstream' sites are having trouble understanding that bethesda is just publishing it. Like they will with iD.

While I thought 2142 was better balanced than 2, it had fewer good maps, worse performance and way more bugs.

Not to derail this fine thread about Splash Damage's new upcoming shooter Brink of course ;-)

    Seriously

I figured this out shortly after I saw the trailer during E3 and instantly lost interest
