I'm crossposting this from the SE music thread because I figure I'm more likely to get the results I need with a wider viewerbase.
Alright you homps. I need some music. Country music...
Well, not really. I'm looking specifically for music by non-country (or as my sister says, "unexpected") artists that have that country sound goin' for em.
The only song I can think of off the top of my head that fits into this mold is She's Electric by Oasis, or probably most of the songs off of Hush Sound's last album.
I've listened to a lot of Wilco and it sort of fits what I'm looking for... However I'm more looking for something along the lines of a band that you wouldn't usually think country/folk (as the example given, Oasis), but they happen to have a song (again, e.g. She's Electric) that fits the bill. The first thing I think of when someone mentions Wilco is alt country.

Okay, along those lines (I think... She's Electric doesn't sound particularly country to me):
Charlatans UK (The Blind Stagger, North Country Boy
Blur (End of a Century)
The Verve (Lucky Man)

Oh, speaking of Ryan Adams, you should check out Whiskeytown. His first band. Way better than anything he's done since. I had the pleasure of seeing them twice about 10 years ago.
A couple off the top of my head that fit the "country from people who don't normally play country" criteria:
- Fountains of Wayne - "Fire in the Canyon" or "Hung Up on You"
- Barenaked Ladies - "Long Way Back Home" or "For You"
- William Shatner - "Real" (okay, to be fair, the song was actually written by Brad Paisley, but still)
On the "awesome twangy musicians/band" list, I gotta throw in Old 97's.
It's all gonna depend on how much country you're looking for in your bands
the references you listed are pretty light in being in any way close to country, maybe as close as those bands get. Anyways check out what i posted. You'll probably dig half.
I can't believe the thread is this long and no one has mentioned Cake yet. Cake is pretty much a mishmash of Country and Indie Rock, especially "Fashion Nugget".
Songs like "Sad Songs and Waltzes" and "She'll Come Back to Me" or even "Stick Shifts and Safety Belts". Once you have identified it as country music, you notice it present in the rest of their music. Also, one of the artists that got me into SOME country is "Pinmonkey" they are like a bluegrass rock band, and fantastic.
Also, anything by the Eagles or the Band really borders the line of rock and country, though you would never hear either of them on a country station.

Fratellis may have done some country inspired songs (I've never heard more than one song) but these are the same guys who did a shoe commercial. They're certainly not a country band.

Also, Elvis Costello has a few country-ish songs (although he also had one full country covers album called Almost Blue) but here's an original I love, called "Stranger in the House", that was from the sessions for his first album:
Lastly, although this is kinda fudging it because it's a full album, is Sweetheart of the Rodeo by The Byrds, who normally before that album didn't do country (although only 2 original members remained in the by that time). They hired Gram Parsons to play piano, and he, with bassist/mandolinist/awesome guy Chris Hillman (formed bluegrass musician) hijacked the sessions and put out a full country (with a hint of soul and folk) album. Check it out.
To be honest, if you want to hear this stuff, why not some music from country artists?
It's sort of a silly concept, but one of my better friends (who I see at least once a week) listens to pretty much nothing but country, whereas I'm more of an alt/indie guy. So I thought it would be a cool idea to make her a CD with "country" music by non-country bands. I had started it a few months back but exhausted resources from my own collection, so I figured it would be a good idea to branch out to other people who might know of some.
Jack White's music generally has a country feel to it. And this is great cover.
And there's always some of Johnny Cash's stuff. "Hurt" for example isn't really a country song, but his version definitely fits what you're looking for.
I don't know if I would say that since the changes started in the 70's
she is celebrated by country music fans but her place in country music has been paved for years by country-pop artists. I don't think her influence on the genre is all that significant.
Music genres change over time, look at rock or hip hop. A lot of what was in country is found more in roots and americana music now.
