As a 27 year old who's never been in an accident, and who's only had two speeding tickets, I'm sure my insurance is too much at $755 per 6 months. I know it's partly due, according to my agent, natural rate increases but I don't know how much of that is reasonable.
Can anyone give me advice on certain aspects of coverage that I may not really need?
I've got:
Bodily Injury Liability
- $500,000 each person/accident(costs me $190)
Property Damage Liability
- $100,000 each accident($180)
Medical Payments(not sure what this is for)
Uninsured motorists-bodily injury
- $500,000 each person/accident($55)
Uninsured motorists-property damage
- $500,000 each person, $250 deductible($46)
This gets a little confusing here, there's some deal where both of these have "$1,500 in customization"
Non-collision damage to my auto
Collision damage to my auto
I'm thinking I might try haggling on the coverage of my auto, I don't know if my consistent repairs on my car should be any indication of its poor value and lower the insurance cost, or my driving schedule/habits.
So, any thoughts on places I could cut without asking for trouble? My whole reason for being concerned, is that when I officially had to get the insurance on my own, I swear I was quoted at roughly $530 for 6 months, and that was only 2 or 2 and a half years ago.

You want your insurance to match you, what is the most likely thing to happen if you cause an accident. Are you going to have 5 kids in your car because you are driving them to and from soccer practice 5 days a week? You essentially have enough bodily injury insurance to cover organ transplants and life support for while they come out of a coma without even putting a dent in your own pocket.
Great service at a premium price. Only still on it so my father gets a multi car policy discount.
25 - driving a 06 altima 51k miles.
Medical covers your medical expenses (up to $5000) in case there is an accident.
edit: Also, what kind of area are you driving in? I maintain $500,000 damage because I drive in Century City and worry about denting a lambo. You may be able to reduce that down.
What about the uninsured motorists, leave it there to protect myself from being sued for medical bills, or is it a bit high as well?
Edit: How come bodily injury doesn't cover the medical expenses?
I also don't really get any "premium service" for this. I pay $5 for roadside assistance but I never use it, and I have no need to contact them at any other time.
I've been in one accident, was rear ended at a stop light.
This right here?
Keep it if not increase it.
that means that if you have an accident that remotely involves an automobile in any way, your car insurance will pay first up to 5000 before it gets sent to your health insurance. I had my leg broken when I got hit by a car as a kid and my mom's autoinsurance covered the entire thing because she had 25k in coverage.
as has been said, decrease your uninsured underinsured.
I'd also say decrease your crash and personal liability all by half at least.
you are also almost at the point where having collision and collateral don't make sense on your car. maybe another year and take those off.
Right off the bat, I'm dropping my $184 collision. The car has fewer miles on it than it should for it's age, but I definitely think it has more maintenance issues than normal.
I'm dropping the liability from 500/500/100 to 100/100/100(accident). I would reduce the accident down to 50, but I'm a little ancy about high car values, or hitting a guy's towed boat or something, and it's only a $7 difference in the premium.
I'm dropping the uninsured/underinsured to 100/100/25, and I'm going to think about that $25,000 of property coverage. Kelley blue book puts my car at $3,355(for private party), and keeping that uninsured property coverage costs me $34.
I'm cutting the medical payment coverage in half to $2,500 at the suggestion of my father, and considering that I have pretty good health insurance and basically everyone who ever rides in my car has health insurance.
This puts me at $510, or $476 if I drop the UI property coverage. I still think I may get a quote from GEICO or something, but does anyone suggest I don't make some of these changes?
The value of your car really shouldn't have any bearing on the insurance you're carrying. This seems to be straight liability insurance. I don't see collision or anything like that.
edit: I fail at reading
IMO, drop the collision entirely and throw $150 a month into a 'new car' savings account. No offense, but a $3000 car really isn't worth getting collision on.
If you're concerned with costs just go to the minimum liability allowed by your state.
That's great they have insurance, you'd still be liable for anything that insurance doesn't cover and that would have to come out of your pocket and that $2500 is very low.
$2500 is still not very much for medical coverage. I doubt it would cover most ER visits, or at least it would come very very close.
I didn't see what company you currently go through. When I bought my second car and tried to add my wife to my insurance, Liberty Mutual wanted to charge us $3600 per year for our coverage (up from $1400). We got a quote from Geico that brought us to $1300 per year for everything.. now that we're married it's just over $1000.
Also, I would recommend them regardless... their service is fantastic. My wife went off the road during an ice storm and did a very minor amount of damage to the vehicle. We called Geico to let them know (since the police came, we wanted to be sure they found out from us rather than the police). They called us back twice, once the next day, and once two weeks later to see how my wife was holding up. Very friendly, very helpful, and the lower premiums do help.
