Can you recommend a new gaming mouse?

NeonBlackJackNeonBlackJack Registered User regular
Hey everyone,

My Logitech G7 Wireless Gaming Mouse has recently started to freeze every fifteen seconds to a minute, which is of course terribly annoying and ruins most gaming experiences, especially shooters. I've read that this is just a hardware defect of the G7 and that tons of people have the problem. Besides being a defective product, the G7 has been my favorite mouse of all time.

So now I'm interested in purchasing a mouse from the new generation.

What is the best gaming mouse today? I prefer the hand-on-top approach of a mouse like the G7 over the fingers-on-the-side approach of some FPS-centric mice. I like buttons. I like smooth.

Thanks!

I like Razer's stuff. I haven't used their newer mice but I have a Diamondback that has been going strong for over three years and I luuuuurve it.

Hmm, right now I'm mostly looking at the Microsoft Sidewinder x8 and the Logitech G9. Thanks for your recommendation on the sidewinder. It seems to share a lot of the shape that I like from the G7. I love that gradual curve that fills the whole hand (oh yea...).

The razer mice look really cool, but I've tried a few before, and they never feel quite right to me. I like a really solid-feeling mouse.

Logitech g5 is pretty much the wired version of the g7.

edit: just read you like smooth. The g5 has a unique texture to it. It's one of those things you need to try in a store to figure out if you like it or not.

    You said you wanted buttons?

The Razer Naga 17 button mouse - http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/19/razer-adds-a-dozen-keys-to-naga-mmo-mouse-intros-rollable-gamin/

Well, if you're into MMOs, the more buttons the better. 21 keybinds on my old warrior in WoW, and I still ran out of reachable keys for more abilities :?

had a Razer Boomslang years ago, just found out they're still around. Those were good mice for gaming circa 1999.

I have (and love) the Razer Lachesis. Very customizable and it's pretty cheap. I forgot how much I got mine for but it was significantly below MSRP on gogamer.com, I believe.

That MX Revolution on sale is SUPER tempting.

Looks like a sleeker version of the G7 but with more buttons and a free-scrolling wheel.

I know my brother just got one of these, so I'll try it out for a little and decide. Cool.

I have a MX Revolution, and have the same lag delay issue you described when playing FPSes when I use it although not as severe as you described. I ended up buying a G5 just to use for when I play FPSes.

I have a Logitech G9, and while I love it, its overkill. I have the res set to 1600dpi I think. I certainly don't use the 3200 its capable of. You would be fine going with the G5 or whatever the next step down may be.

The G9x is the current version of the G9.

Also remember with the Revolution that the battery is not a swappable kind. If it dies you're pretty much fucked. I know a guy who used to use a Revolution for general mousing but then switched to a different mouse for gaming because he had the battery die on him during gaming before, and was screwed.

This is why wireless mice like the G7 or the X8 are good. G7 has hot swap batteries that take about 5 seconds to switch, and the X8 has a little cord to connect to the mouse, again takes 5 seconds.

    Hmm...all good points.

More and more I'm realizing that all I really want is a working G7 :-(

The Logitech Wave Board set - mouse sucks. I keep hitting the right side button with my pinky - and it doesn't fit my hand right.

The Microsoft leather-faux grain one from a few years back - that fit great and worked really well.

I own 1 G9, 1 MX Revolution, and 3 MX518's. (1 for work b/c using a crappy mouse for 9+ hours is unbearable, 1 old one that started dying b/c I abused the hell out of it by constantly letting it fall off the side of my couch onto a hardwood floor :?, and 1 that I bought to replace the dying one before I somehow managed to fix it back to 100% completely working.)

Here's the summary - I would not use the MX Rev for gaming. The G9 is the best gaming mouse I've ever used, but it IS overkill and the only reason I bought it was b/c it was on crazy sale for $20 a few months ago.

In short, the MX518 is all you need. :) ...unless you also don't need money, then the G9 is all you need. :P
