I just moved into an apartment and right now I'm just using some stolen wi-fi(extremely weak signal) and I've tried looking up some local companies but christ it's a pain to browse.
A cheap deal seems to be with Verizon DSL. Seems I need a one year agreement which isn't to bad (month or so in the summer will be wasted but whatever). But I've never used DSL. I'll pretty much be the only person using it so I'm not that much concerned about the bandwidth.
Just tryin to get some advice.
I'm in Greensburg PA (just outside Pittsburgh).
Edit: Err looks like I need Verizon phone service? And it seems they don't even offer it here at all, guess I should just phone my land lord?
Not sure about Verizon, but with AT&T, the magic word for cheap dsl is "dry loop dsl" I believe, which they were obligated to provide by the government a few years ago. You don't need to pay for phone service to get this, though the price probably varies by region. As far as quality goes, I pay for the 6mb plan from AT&T in Chicago and am extremely happy with it. I can get 600kB/s downloads about any hour of the day.
Sounds like the kinda response I was looking for - looking into it now... well.. very slowly now.
Thanks
Edit: Grr looks like they don't offer them here either, I texted my landlord - guess I should just cross my fingers.
Edit: Andddd he's retarded. Another local place I found doesn't do this building either. Only redirected me to Comcast.
I assumed they'd be the most expensive. Anyone know anything about their pricing?

Comcast and Verizon are on about the same price scale in my area (Central VA)... they seem to compete only on the level of who can provide shite customer service.
Internet-Only options aren't terribly expensive... I think they go as low as $40/mo or so. The package deals for new customers can be pretty nice too... and once your year (or sometimes two year) agreement is up, you can switch to the other guy.
Being from Texas this might not help, but I'll second the internet-only option as being fairly cheap.
I have time warner road runner with their turbo boost (hate the stupid names) and I'm supposed to get up to 17mbs. My actual speed varies between 11 mbs and 23 mbs, with an average around 16/17, so I'm pretty pleased with paying $43 a month.

I've been in an apartment before where my only option was Comcast. There weren't any companies that would offer DSL to my specific apartment, even though there were some others in the apartment complex/community that could get AT&T DSL. Annoying.
In any event, Comcast is usually going to cost you more than a DSL plan, but you'll usually be getting more speed from it as well. If you can get a good special offer price, it can be a good deal. Right now (at least in my area) Comcast is offering 19.99/month for 6 months for Comcast customers (so if you get cable TV) or $34.99/month for 6 months for non-current customers. At the end of the 6 months you can sometimes just call them up and try to cancel and they may offer to extend that price for a longer period.
I did try Road Runner, everything looked good until they said they didn't do my building.
Anyway, I just got off the phone with Comcast.
I was getting set up with the 20 dollar a month deal. So they got me all set up and said here call this number for the local office.
The lady there tried to bump me up to a 30 dollar a month thing which I had to talk her out of. But what got my goat was the 50 dollar install.
Just before leaving for school the other day I helped my neighbor get setup with a laptop and an internet connection.
I had called comcast for her and they asked if they needed somebody to install it, I said no (it's 50 bucks to plug in a few wires?).
The comcast guy agreed, saying it is very easy (... a monkey could do it).
But this lady said I couldn't and had to have somebody install. She has no idea how that happened with her.
Now was she simply pulling my chain again trying to suck more money out of me?

Depends on the kind of install they need to do. If your house is already wired, you can do it yourself. If not, they have to run lines and that's what they're charging for.

Yeah... this pretty much. And actually, even if your place is already wired but you don't have cable TV, they'll likely try to tell you you need to have a tech come out to check everything with the lines and whatnot. If you already have Cable TV through Comcast, you definitely do not need someone else to do the install. You can either get a self-install kit in the mail, or pick it up at your local Comcast center.
That was damned annoying. So the lady previously who I had to call had me forced to pay this install - and had me at that cheaper price with no cable TV(which as I though you can't do). The install wouldn't be for a whole week either.
I simply jumped back into their "chat" thing on the comcast website.
The guy said he had no idea who this lady was and what the hell was going on.
Signed me up (guy was awesome even convinced to get cable) and no installation fee and a guy will be here tomorrow with everything. Bonus points for not having to call anyone like last time either.
I love big companies sometimes, never know what crazy shiz will go down.
Welp, anyway thanks gents.
In closing - I demand more chat centers and less call centers.
if you have fiberoptic access in your area fios/qwest are great cheap options. They typically give you equal upload and download speeds too which allows you to seed torrents if you're a part of any torrenting seeding sites/runs servers etc.
In my area the price for 1Mb/s up and down is 9.99 10Mb/s is 19.99 20Mb/s is 39.99. They even offer 100mb/s a second if you're willing to pay. Verizon and qwest are the only two companies I know of that do this.
