In a couple months I'm moving to Hawaii. I'd rather not pay for the shipping for a vehicle I don't really want anymore and want to try and get rid of my truck ASAP.
Details: It's a 2007 2WD Ford Ranger, six cylinders, extended cab with about 18k miles. It has a tiny circular crack where a pebble hit the windshield and a loose panel on the driver side window that sometimes pops up when rolling up the window. I still owe approximately $9,600.
According to Kelly Blue Book a good price for selling to a private party is around $12,855, and for trade in $10,475. It's the latter part I'd like a little information about. Is the trade in value about right if I'm out and out selling the truck to a retailer or would I only be able to expect that much money if I were to be buying a vehicle from them?
As far as I'm concerned, so long as I can pay off the title I'll be happy. I don't need or expect a profit and would be perfectly satisfied getting rid of the monthly payment for a vehicle I don't especially care for.
Trade in value is how much you'll get for selling it to a retailer. On the negative side, given that they will have the replace the windshield and possibly the side panel as well, that number might be a little lower.
Although, you do have the benefit of having only 18k miles on it, which is absurdly low for a 3 year old car. That will seriously work in your favor and could potentially negate the above.
Also, I wouldn't be surprised if the dealer gave you 10k and then turned around and sold it for 15-16.

And good for them if they can. I'll likely put up an ad to try and sell it to someone for a bit more, but if I can't do so in time I'd like to have a backup plan should I not be able to before I have to move.

Selling to CarMax is always a safe bet. They do buy your car for a bit more than it's worth compared to a dealer, especially recent models, which a 2007 model is with that low of mileage.
on the other hand its a 2WD truck..... when I bought my car a dealer told me that they had just sold a fully loaded 2007 ford F150 that sat in their lot for 2 and a half years because it was 2WD
you might want to list it online for a while to see what kind of interest you get and then go to a dealer if time starts a crunching.
a couple of months is more than enough time to sell a car.
try puting it up for 14 or 14.5 and see what offers you get IMO.

I love Carmax. When they give you the quote, its good for 3 days or something to give you time to think it over (then the offer is no longer good). Seriously great and easy way to do it. But since the offer is only good for a short amount of time, save it till you need it.

People are probably more discriminating about 4WD / 2WD with an F-150 than with a Ranger.

This. It actually lasts 7 days (or at least it did in my case). They offered a couple grand more than other dealerships.
The number I got from carmax for my car was slightly higher than other dealerships, but it was only good for a trade-in. They gave me a much lower number for just selling outright, which with the tax break and other incentives from the dealership I ended up working with completely canceled out the slight benefit they had given me.
Of course, you're not looking to get a new car, so the situation is different.
I sold my 2005 Mazda 3 5-door with about a year of driving on it for about $19,000 to a private party (I think I paid $23,000). CarMax was going to give me $13,000.

See how many books I've read so far in 2010

However, I ended up selling my car on www.autotrader.com for even more.

Edit: I sold it in 2006.
