Are you in the US? then there is no one to call. It isn't illegal. Best to suggest, diplomatically, to your friend to say something to his wife about it.

Yes I live in the U.S. ...I can't believe it. No one?
Why can't you believe it? It's a legal product that adults are allowed to consume. Christ, I've seen lung cancer patients on oxygen smoke. Just because it's bad for you doesn't mean people suddenly stopped doing it.
Not sure police/child services would get involved unless the baby was actually born, but I could be wrong. I imagine they would intervene in the case of drugs, so I could definitely be in the wrong here. If there were someone to call, it'd probably be a child protection agency or child services.

Why do you care? It's not your kid.
No offense, but if they don't care, you shouldn't either. I mean, if you wanna argue with 'em, feel free, but it's kind of a waste of your time.

As horrible and disgusting as it is I don't think she is breaking any laws. Seriously though, fuck her personal rights. She is screwing up more than just her body by doing this.

Like I said, diplomatically suggest to the husband he say something.

I still don't understand why people give a shit about someone else's kid. It's not your job to save everyone.
Unless there is a fire and you're a fireman. Then it's kind of necessary. But otherwise!
Thank you, everyone but Magus. I guess I'll just send constant emails about it, but not even the Surgeon General website has anything specific about pregnancy and smoking.

That seems odd. I'm looking at my pack of cigarettes right now and it says-
SURGEON GENERALS WARNING: Smoking By Pregnant Women May Result in Fetal Injury, Premature Birth, And low Birth Weight.
People here really need to get a grip. I am not saying smoking is anything but bad but some people (mostly the OP) are acting like she is doing heroin. How much is she smoking? 3-4 smokes a day? A pack? two? Is she trying to ween herself off? You have to remember untill a generation ago people where smoking like it was going out of style and not all kids came out as mutant freaks. Tell her your opinion but with an attitude of "I don't care if either goes to jail" I don't think she will be very receptive.
Well quite simply there's no real evidence that pregnancy and smoking don't mix. There's dozens of studies that show evidence between smoking and miscarriage but I don't think there's anything to do with actual deformities of the baby or harming the baby past that. There's some evidence that your fetus is more likely to be born prematurely and at a lower weight as well.
But good luck finding anything concrete. The honest to god fact is that smoking in moderation isn't all that bad, the problem comes from the fact people smoke so much in one day. On the same note drinking while pregnant in moderation is not all that bad either but it's helpful to tell everyone no drinking because too many people have no concept of moderation.
On the drinking note it's not illegal for a pregnant lady to be drinking either it's simply discouraged by peer pressure.
Put simply of the millions of smokers in this country less than half give up smoking for pregnancy. I'd stop being concerned by it and move on.

Realistically, unless she's smoking like a freight train there's not exceptional risk to the baby. Keep in mind that a couple of generations of humans were born to parents often less aware of the risks of smoking while pregnant, if not smoking in general. A doctor will always recommend she quits smoking, but if she has trouble he may very well suggest she just keep it occasional. I suspect this is the response you'd get if you tried to bring it up.
Plus maybe she became pregnant somewhat unexpectedly and is working on quitting gradually, which works best. It's not going to help the baby much if she quits completely then 4 months later snaps and starts chain smoking.
If you actually think they're both ignorant of the risks, you should inform them, but they probably are aware.
Legality of it is a touchy issue. Women can have abortions for personal reasons, so in a legal sense the fetus is theirs to do with as they please...to a point, as far as abortions go, however. The difference here obviously is that the baby is going to be born, and then there's no debate over whether or not it's alive.

Okay uh. Constant emails? If this guy is your friend, voice your concern. But being overbearing and annoying about it isn't going to help anyone.
This thread has outlived it's usefulness. Deletion is recommended.
Really? It looks like people just started offering advice or information you didn't agree with. If you bring it up, they're going to say one of several things:
"My doctor told me occasional limited smoking would be fine."
"I'm actively cutting back and trying to quit."
"OMG I wasn't aware of the risks."
"I'm not pregnant, I'm just fat, you horrible man."
"I don't give a ****, it's my body"
In all but one of those situations you're no help at all

Well technically he could be of help in that situation which he seems to think is the only possible situation. It's irritating that his opinion on something so fact based couldn't be changed though. It's like arguing with someone who eats organics, even if you prove that organic isn't better they'll still find a reason to eat it.

Yah, and I don't mean to be jerky. Personally I think it'd be pretty lame to not do your best to quit smoking upon becoming pregnant, which she may or may not be doing.
Understand that the less of an ass you come across as, the better chance you have of being successful. I say this because of your opening post which makes it sound like your first plan was to be like "hey stop smoking or I will call the cops on your ass!" It's nice that you care, despite what Magus says. Don't just tell them facts, they probably know, don't just tell them "hey you should maybe quit smoking," they know that'd be ideal. Talk to them like friends. Ask them if they've tried to quit. Ask if she wants help quitting and offer your help!

*edit* Fast Elki is fast.
I would guess the short answer is probably there's no one to call and neither of them are going to jail.

"So you saw a woman being raped in an alley?"
"Yes sir"
"And you did nothing?"
"Fuck no! It ain't my job to save everyone!"
Dude, there's a difference between saving everyone and being a dick.

While I agree it's bad for her baby, I'm pretty sure she knows the fucking risks and decides to smoke irregardless of them.
How would you like it if she came over and banged on about something you did that wasn't illegal?
Satans..... hints.....
