My family is the huge and grand pops wants one of them new fangled flat panels. They are cheap enough these days i figure we can set up a charity paypal and have the money fast. IE mass email people letting them know what the deal is; setup a way for them to donate what they wish via the web.

Anyone know of any websites or apps to make this easy?
Anyone done anything like this?
I heard of websites that do this sort of group paypal charity thing but don't know of any off hand?

I'd use this as an opportunity to reach out to family you haven't talked to in awhile. Write a good letter, spread the word, etc.

E: Sorry, that is just my opinion. I understand what you're asking for though, and hope another poster else knows a good way to do that.

That's not exactly a charity, and paypal charges money to do gifts. You'd be better off actually mailing out letters and having people send you checks, then just buying the thing with a lump some and taking some pictures of him standing with it, then mail out thank you letters.

I get that. Its pooling for a gift. Was looking for a non check way to raise a smallish sum of money.

Right on. Im lucky in that I see very extended family at least once a year and most family multiple times a year. We are tight. My thought was to use email to get it out.

    Anyone use http://www.lolligift.com/ ?

Go to a bank that has branches nation wide, and open an account. Send the account number along with a letter explaining about the TV etc. All your family has to do is walk into a bank and make a deposit into that account.

Some banks do offer a type of account that has a "deposits only" account number you can give out to people. This way the account stays safe and everyone can deposit to it!

Alternatively, just get them to do electronic gift cards to Amazon. While it may not offer the absolute cheapest deals on the TVs, it is still much cheaper (20-50% less) than stores like Best Buy.
