So I finally got an XBOX 360

I bought Bioshock and Elder Scroll IV along with the console.
So i'm asking for games recomendations for my new toy. My favourite genres are RPG and side scrollers but I am open to anything good. I never had an original XBOX so feel free to recomend O XBOX titles too .

A lot of people loved Mass Effect. I found it too slow, and the downtime between action too long. But, the voice acting and storyline were both stellar.

I don't even have a 360 yet but I sure have 23 games for it that I've bought when the prices were like $10. That's how I roll. I won't be needing to ask for any recommendations when I finally get one lol

Seeing as you have a hockey avatar, get NHL 10 when it hits and join us in the NHL thread. The EA NHL games have been amazing the past two years and NHL 10 is building even more on that.
Little bit of a thread jack but I also just bought a 360 and I picked up Bioshock and Assassin's Creed shorty after I bought it. I finished AC late last week so I'm going to go out tomorrow and pick up either Fallout 3 or Arkham Asylum but for the life of me I can't decide which I should get.
I'm leaning to wards Fallout since it will be a bit cheaper and because it has much more gameplay which means I won't have to go out and pick a new game for a while. However, I love me some Batman and a great Batman game is hard to pass up (I will eventually get it, but it won't be for a month or more)
If someone could give some advice that would push me either way that would be great!
Now is a bad time to pick up Fallout 3 when the GOTY edition comes out in like a month, including all the DLC.
also if you have a computer to run it seriously consider getting the pc version the mod community has done some great (and some OMFG WTF is that) stuff
I'd recommend Fallout 3 - PC or 360 both are awesome, but on the PC you get the same amount of awesome which you can increase through mods. Just need to be careful, as the F3 modding community has some serious mental problems.
Tales of Vesperia - Good 'traditional' RPG if you will, great story and game play. I still need to do another playthrough of it myself, New Game+ and all.
Mass Effect - Awesome game, fucking get it or I'll cut you.
Dead Space - Ok, it's not RPG like but it's still a great game. Survival horror I guess? Either way check it out, it's a damn good run.
Resident Evil 5 - Yea, a lot of people bad mouth it and if you got me going I'd probably do so as well BUT, it was still a fun play through. Minus quick time events, those can eat my nuts.
Edit:
Forgot to mention - Sacred 2 - decent time waster, good to play with friends kind of deal. Kind of Diablo 2 style where you pick a character, get a vague storyline you're supposed to follow, then click and slash your way to the end.
Don't original xbox games have horrible compatibility issues on the 360? I've only ever played Halo 2 and it was a waste of time. Maybe someone can shed some more light on this?

It varies game by game. Stubbs the Zombie ran smoothly on mine, while Jet Set Radio Future had horrible stuttering issues.
I know there's a list of compatible games out there somewhere. Could also always just pick up an original xbox on the cheap somewhere. That's what pissed me off about my PS3, I wanted to get one with the BC built into it they weren't getting sold anymore and I couldn't be bothered to actually go out and look for one.
ps - Tales of Vesperia is NOT a "traditional RPG." It's an RPG with a fucking terrible combat system that makes anyone who likes traditional RPGs want to throw the game out the window. So glad I rented it instead of buying it.
Never had any problems with the battle system at all, was pretty easy to get used to - minus the fact that they never actually told you that you could customize the AI in detail. I ended up finding that through a youtube video for GP farming.
The only times that the battle system pissed me off was during the final boss fight, and when trying to get certain secret missions. Also there were one or two fights where the main character has to fight two or more enemies on his own and it get's kinda hard, but that's a difficulty issue not a battle system one.
IMO these are the must have's of the 360's library at the moment:
- Mass Effect
- Call of Duty 4
- Halo 3
- Red Faction
- GTA IV
- Fallout 3
You will squeeze a lot of enjoyment from those games for a long time to come. Other than Bioshock and Eldar Scrolls IV, which were also excellent choices on your part and are both fantastic.
Yeah people stopped spoilering stuff in the Mass Effect thread a long time ago. So if you want the story ruined for you, hop on in it. Otherwise steer clear. On the upside, Bioware dudes post in that thread probably more than PA guys do so we are always up to date on the goin on's of our favourite RPG.
Oh, as for OXbox games, get Jet Set Radio Future, Psychonauts, and Panzer Dragoon Orta. It's a fucking shame that Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath doesn't work for the 360, otherwise I'd suggest that too.
Shadow Complex is definitely on my list of recommended titles. Also, if the hulking around and murdering of humanoid freaks and monsters is your thing, I do actually recommend Gears 2. But wait for a bit on that, there's supposedly a GOTY edition with all the DLC coming up before long at 40 bucks. For FPS games, either of the most recent Call of Duty titles is a solid choice.

I haven't played World at War but I can't imagine Treyarch improved on Call of Duty 4 in any meaningful way. I would say get 4 or wait for Modern Warfare 2.

They did, and I'm also taking into consideration that not everyone has the knee-jerk "AVOID" reaction to World War II.
There are a bevy of excellent 2d titles on XBLA; Live Arcade and Rock Band are pretty much the only reason I turn on my 360 nowadays. Shadow complex, Splosion Man, Braid, Ikaruga, Geometry Wars 2, Castle Crashers, the Dishwasher -- on and on and on, the hits keep rolling.

CoD 4 is still the superior. WaW i didnt really enjoy that much, it wasn't nearly as well balanced and the guns aren't as fun. They did a good job of it, its a good game, but CoD 4 is still the better game in every way.

The sad thing is I wasn't even thinking about spoilers when I tried to warn the OP away from that thread.

PS - Fuck the last boss's 'third' form.
Step 2: Buy Rez
Step 3: What do you need a third step for, you already own Rez.
Well, he might want to play it.
If you like racing games at all, I'd recommend Burnout Paradise.

- Call of Duty 4

Trust me.

then certegy denied my check, which i had to use because some clerk at the bookstore neglected to hand back my debit card to me a week ago
but at least i'm getting some games on the cheap through goozex
Actually, you don't have to download Shadow Complex in order to play Batman. All you have to do is buy Batman.

That's a good reason too though.
Damn, stuck writing checks like some old person. That must be embarrassing.
i feel worse for the people standing behind him in line waiting for "that guy" to write a check.
way to go "that guy".
<and im an old person>
Remember: don't even start writing the check until the cashier tells you the total! That is how it's done.
