the hell do i find me some nerds?
INeedNoSaltwith blood on my teethRegistered Userregular
so i recently moved in to my new school (university of wisconsin - madison) aaaand while my house mates are cool, i'm not terribly social so i'm not really into the hanging out not doing anything gig.
i would like to find some people who are about as relaxed as i am, aren't terribly interested in going out wandering around, and maybe don't guffaw insultedly at the idea of playing a board game or even (gasp?) pullin' out the D&D textbooks.
unfortunately, i really got no idea where to be lookin'.
madison. balls yes. That bar with the free bacon. FUCK THE ROCK ON! um. the union at UW-M looked to be pretty nerd infested. actually that whole school... you'll be alright.

somehow i managed to not get housed with any of them
i will look at meetup.com
the school probably does have a sci-fi or fantasy club or something (i mean, 40,000 students, how could it not?) but i don't know where to find 'em. there's nothing like that in the school's registered student organizations list for example.
Clubs are probably the best as far as long-term is concerned.
If the school hosts any sort of social message board or other place to post messages (corkboards were all the rage when I was in school) just toss up a "Looking for..." thread.
Just keep an eye out for anything that sounds fun, basically.

It's more than likely posted someplace in your Student Centre, often on a corkboard (even now!). Alternately, look around at your local indie bookstores, comics stores or game stores to see if they have such a thing. You might ask somebody in the student centre (or student services or whatever) if they have any further information.

You could also convert some non-nerds. This gives you the simultaneous bonus of branching out and getting other people to try new stuff.

can i ask how you found that stuff, Joe?
my google skill and trying to dig through the school's web site both seemed completely fruitless

Sit somewhere with a lot of student foot traffic (cafeteria etc) with a set of d&d dice casually laying out while you do something else. They will come.
This is actually how one of my old GM's found a few players.

This is similar to how I found my college friends. I set up my PS2 (at the time newly launched) in the communal lounge in my dorm after peak hours (10:30pm for my admittedly smaller college) and began playing. People will wander past and those of a similar mindset may just plop right down and ask to join in. I would recommend stuff other than Madden or Halo if you're really looking to be more 'selective' in your search for fellow nerdlings.
Also, watching appropriate anime in the communal room (if that's allowed) is also an option.
What do you tend to wear? I know that sounds stupid but I know I tend to broadcast my interests pretty loudly when I'm not in my work clothes. I know some people like to pose and all that but if I'm wearing my old Fruit Fucker t-shirt and get a bit of a nod from someone who passes by I know that there's a decent chance that I've encountered someone whom I could likely share space with if need be. It's college so I wouldn't be shy at all about your interests (just keep it within bounds of politeness) there's no need to sort of seek nerds on the sly.

Maybe someday, they'll see a hero's just a man. Who knows he's free.
Where are you? At the Lakeshore cafeteria there was a group that almost always was playing D&D down by the coffee shop. Then there's the Anime club that meets down in Humanities, yeah. Fuck, if you have any CompSci classes you'll be set the second you walk into there. Classes haven't even started yet, have they?
Relax. Unless you sit in your room playing WoW all day you won't have any problems finding people...and even then I still managed to find people there

I'm actually in Tripp hall, so if people are hangin' out in the Lakeshore Cafeteria, I'm sure I'll see 'em. :x
Classes start tomorrow, but I'm taking history and biology type classes.

Geek.Kon 2009 is coming up

Steam/PSN/XBL/Minecraft / LoL / - Benevicious | WoW - Duckwood - Rajhek
I just searched
university of wisconsin madison sci-fi club
That came up with a link to the Anime Club and a mention of the Sci-Fi Club. I saw the "last year's organizations" list and searched that for sci-fi.
I saw a reference to Geek.Kon 2007 and then looked to see if there was one for this year!
