Throwing away harddrives. Best way to destroy them?
They are not worth the time to wipe and sell. So I am tossing all my non sATA drives I have collected over the years. Whats the best way to physically destroy them?
Do you think that will take a while with 6 drives?
Unscrew them, beat the platters to shit, shouldnt take more than a few minutes per harddrive.

Power tools?
This shouldn't be so much about time as much as fun.
Yea, thats how I look at it. I'd get a rifle and setup a shooting range.

Get a set of screwdrivers (most hard drives need torx drivers, home depot sells them) and dismantle them. The magnets inside are great fun, and running your fingers over the platters will pretty much guarantee no one can recover data on them. If you're really paranoid, take sandpaper to the platters.
The magnets are fun when the drives are powered up, but be careful!

The magnets are awesome. Just dirtying the platters should be enough, unless your mom is ex-CIA or something. Again, this is more about fun than anything. Breaking apart the platter is guaranteed to keep your data safe. Do it any way you see fit.
Kill them with fire? I've seen people mount firecrackers and model rocket engines to them to destroy them. Using power tools does sound like more fun though

I did this, but honestly, it's probably more trouble than it's worth.
Though cooking a HDD with charcoal in an abandoned grill pit is probably an environmental hazard of some sort. Pretty humorous though.
Also: here's a kick-ass presentation (make sure your speakers are on, but not turned up loud): http://www.impactmovie.com/edr/
That presentation spread misinformation and was really long and boring. It quoted ancient news articles that exemplified bad journalism. So far, there is no evidence at all that anyone can recover data off of a drive that has been single-pass zeroed, let alone wiped with noise or in multiple passes.
Sure, it might be technically possible to read off of a zero-wiped drive with moderate accuracy (say, 70%) by pulling apart the drive and reading magnetic residue off the platters, but with the complexity of hard drive firmware writing things in weird ways, file systems splitting up files, and strange, undocumented file formats, the likelihood of extracting any useful data is so close to zero with the equipment cost millions of dollars greater than the potential returns, it's not even worth considering it a potential problem.
Get a few $15 USB ATA/SATA cables, do a single pass zero wipe, and resell the drives if they're even new enough to bother.
Yeah, since you have no desire to keep them (but really, even cheap drives are worth something, throw 'em on Kijiji and you'll get someone) I'm going to have to go with the firing range option.
Clamp 'em in at the bottom, get way back, and let fly.

Looking for a DX:HR OnLive code for my kid brother.
Can trade TF2 items or whatever else you're interested in. PM me.
Holy shit guys it crushes the hard drives this is revolutionary and no one has ever crushed a drive before wow awesome we need this or the haxxers will steal our megahertz.
I can only imagine what they're charging for that shit.

I dunno, I thought it was pretty neat. The company I work with was getting rid of a few hundred computers, and they were exploring options and this came up. Granted this was a few years ago, but it stuck with me for some reason.

I can watch crap get shredded for hours and never get bored.
They are pretty powerful magnets, fun as all fuck to play with, just be careful, my dad bruised up his hand pretty good by getting skin caught between the magnets.
But, we used the magnet to play tricks on my dog. it was strong enough to work through a wood table, dog coudlnt' figure out why one of his toys(that we hid one of the magents in) was moving by itself.
I think "Will it Shred?" could even surpass "Will it Blend?"!
It is CRAZY how powerful and large those shredders are. They need that technology from that Time Warp episode that detects skin and stops in milliseconds. Because these are the types of things you see bad guys fall into in Indiana Jones movies...
obviously, you should stack them, and get iron oxide + aluminum powder to make thermite powder.
then turn them into slag.
Fun times.
The Screen Savers (RIP) had a segment about destroying hard drives several years ago. Kevin Rose mixed up some thermite and went to town. The best one was rigging an ejection mechanism. Push a button and the hard drive shoots out the window!

2. Attach power to drive
3. Power ON!
4. Pliers
5. Fun sounds
Like xzzy said, gab the magnets.

...wouldn't that present similar problems as to microwaving foil?
yeah, but it's not my microwave, i could care less.

I'm surprised that you at least care a little bit about other people's microwaves. That shows strength of character.
