Sharing a one gig file one time/Apartment hunting sucks

Long story short: Went apartment hunting for girlfriend who is across country. Video taped apartments so she could see them. Need to get a one gig zip file to her across the country. Willing to pay 5-10 bucks for a quick service. What are my options?

What is this I don't even.

use a file sharing network like soulseek?

I have not ever tried to make a torrent file. I hadn't really thought about it; I've never approached it as something you could use to share between just two peers. I will look into that.

Could you use a file splitter and then email the bits and pieces?

Run it through Windows Media Encoder, which is free...

Unless your video is 3 hours long there's no reason it should be 1 gig.

You can probably get down to 10 megs per minute or less even at a high quality WMV compression.

Torrents work quickly because lots of people are sharing the data amongst themselves. Between two people I can't see there being much gain.

What file format is it in? Jasconius is right in that it should be compressible.

My recommendation is UPS 2-day air.

Actually read an article that said for very large (many terabytes) amounts of data, it is faster to just ship the hard drives between the locations.

I back Jasconius, there's no way it should be 1 gigabyte large.

After that... making a torrent file is easy, but requires that you and her are online and such, and have fast connections. If you have fast connections but can't be online simultaneously, use a file splitter + upload service (mediafire/rapidshare/etc.). Otherwise post a thumbdrive or sd card.

Fastest and cheapest (free) way would be to install Windows Live Sync on both computers, sign in with the same account, and sync the folder containing the file on your computer to an empty folder on her computer.

There's Handbrake, which will compress your video.

Megavideo.com will let you upload videos upto a gig, but beware spyware and popups.

But your best bet is compressing and uploading your video.

Most any messenger (I use Pidgin) can transfer files pretty well.

Hell, I transferred the Windows 7 RC to my friend a few days ago. That's 3 gb.

Or you could set up an FTP that she can access. Bonus this way is that you can just add whatever else to it and she can download it at her leisure.

I'm not sure if 1GB is past the break even point for "MailNet" being faster. For a file transfer of that size to take a day, you'd need to average 12kBps up. And MailNet isn't going to take just 24 hours, unless you send it overnight.

You should be able to compress it. I second Windows Media Encoder.

Whether you can or not, Dropbox is free and easy. Download, make an account, drop it in. You get 2GB of space with the free account. I don't know if there are size restrictions for a single file, but if there are, you can compress and split.

compress and upload to youtube. done. anything other than that is silly. there is no reason to send an uncompressed 1gig file unless you are working on professional video editing.

torrents are a non starter, as you need multiple peers for it to work properly. with just two of you, its just as fast as sending it over IM.

I'm with flatline -- how long is this video? Unless it's really long (in which case you'd just split it up beforehand), youtube (or another video sharing service) is by far the easiest way to get the video to her.

Live Sync or mailing a Flash drive (for the love of god UPS is terrible though, use something else) would be the best way to go.

And yea, get the file size down, esp if you're going to try a file transfer. sure she needs to see what it looks like, but I'm sure it'd be fine at a bit lower quality.

Well, I tried to torrent it. Part of the problem was sleep/work cycles. I needed to be able to get it to her without having to interact with my computer at any point when she could. Bittorrent didn't work for some reason. (I'm guessing the announcer stops announcing me as a seeder eventually or something?) At this point, it's likely we'll just be able to send it over an instant messaging service or something. Missed one deadline goal, but no big deal. Thanks.

    Again, dropbox.

It's exactly what you want and need. You upload it, go to sleep, shut off your computer, whatever, doesn't matter. She gets it at her leisure.

Don't mail it to her on a thumb drive. It's slow and costs you something. This is 2009! We have better methods of transferring bits than mailing them to each other.

Don't zip/rar it into pieces to get by some filesize restriction and make her have to stitch it back together. There's alternatives that don't require extra work.

Don't compress it unless you can do so with virtually no loss in quality. If you could send her the full res 1 GB file just as easily as a lower res 500 MB file, go with the full res. Unless the compressed quality is fine, then upload it to a video site like some have suggested here...

I wouldn't try to send it over an IM client, not a file that large. In the past, if my connection drops, I had to retry. Also you're looking for a method where you both don't have to be on the computer at the same time, so IM not so good.

If you want to get this to her quickly, then make a windows live account that you two can share, and have her install windows live sync on her computer and log in. Then, at your leisure, install sync and sign in, and you'll be able to create a folder on her computer and set up a shared folder. You drop the 1 GB file in that folder and it automatically starts syncing. In the morning when she wakes up, she has the video.

Vimeo was made for this. First, compress with H.264, there's absolutely no reason it should be a gig. Second, upload to Vimeo, make it private.

    I'm trying out dropbox now.

As for how long it is, it's probably about 30 minutes of video and several high-res photos. It was gathered from about 8 guided apartment tours. I don't want to down-rez it much because the whole point is to see detail.
