Bugs, oh yay!

So I left my apartment window open today for some fresh air, and I guess over the course of the past few hours bugs have somehow managed to make it into my apartment in damn near droves. I count a tleast a dozen or so flying mosquito type bugs all along my ceiling and circling my lamp.

Do I just grab a thing of raid and start spraying?

Do those bug clicker things you plug into the wall work as well as advertised.

can I blame this on my landlord?

And I doubt you would be successful in blaming your landlord for you leaving your window open.

You could ask him/her to install screens on your windows though.

If they resemble super-large mosquitos (like an inch long or more, with legspan) they're probably just crane flies, which are harmless and stupid, and you can kill them pretty easily (whack them with something). I'd avoid the spraying route, simply because it'd be overkill (ha ha, no pun intended), and I'm not sure how effective it'd be.

Really, killing them with a fly swatter or something should be easiest and fastest and most effective. Then just get a screen for your window, and problem solved!

No, you can't blame this on your landlord.

(also I've noticed they're more likely to come in at night when you have a light on, so leaving your window open during the day might be the better option. You may get different bugs, though. :) )

I have this problem too at my house since we have two dogs and their poop attracts all sorts of nasty flies.

As the folks have said, flyswatter is a good idea. If you've got a heavy investation, invest in some flypaper. They're usually sold in like 6 tubes to a pack and it's dirt cheap, though it will take a day or two for it to work.

Be REALLY careful with fly-spray and the like. The chemicals are really nasty (cancer ahoy) so just be judicious when spraying it around your kitchen and whatnot.

Actually a neat trick I use is to use a simple spray bottle set to the mist setting and fill it with water. A quick blast of water will weigh down your average flies wings and cause them to collapse into the ground. You can just snatch it or smack it with a swatter that much quicker. Plus hey! No chems!

Do those clicking things you plug do well to keep them away, or are they kind of a scam?

Bug zappers will get bug goo everywhere. Swatters limit the debris field to a few inches.

I believe he's talking about some sort of new fangled sonic device. Or perhaps it reharmonizes aetheric vibrations.

    Nope, never.
(It had holes in it, which was the problem in the first place)

Anyway, now I'm concerned because I shut the window, and the bugs are gone, but I don't know where they could have went.

They need water to lay eggs right?

Depends on the bug, if they're just normal flies, the biggest worry you'll have to worry about is you have any food lying outside (ie fruit laying in a bowl on the kitchen table, open cans, trash bags etc, standing pools of water etc). As long as you have your trash covered and no food left outside, they will basically starve to death pretty quickly after a couple of days.

So yeah, keep your food covered and stored away, cover any trash cans/bags and you should be find, you'll most likely find their corpses in the dark dusty corners of your rooms as they prefer to avoid bright light and movement.

If you mean those little things you plug into the wall, I don't think they'll stop bugs from coming in through giant open windows. They're more for keeping bugs from coming in through tiny holes in your walls and foundation.
