Getting PS3 to play nice with HDMI

Purchased a second-hand PS3, hooked it up with an HDMI cable to my Samsung panel, was able to turn it on and start doing stuff... updated the firmware from 2.8 to 3.0, and now when I boot up the PS3 it simply won't output on HDMI. To regain signal I had to connect it to the TV via component cables, and if I try changing the video mode to HDMI I lose the video signal until it reverts to component.

Any ideas on what I should try to get it to function?

Have you tried shutting down, hooking it up via HDMI, then holding the power button (usually for about 5 seconds) until it beeps twice when you power it on? It will boot with the default video settings.

it might be defaulting to a resolution your television doesn't support, try connecting both at the same time and doing hdmi - auto and see if that works

if not, start at the lowest res and work up seeing if those work.

Mine won't work on one of my TVs if I have anything higher than 720p (the TV's resolution selected), you'd think it would automatically detect that, especially since I have all of them selected, but no, nothing.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I've given it another try, and pinpointed the issue. The HDMI cable that came with the system is bad in some way -- if I use a different cable, the connection is fine, and likewise if I try to hook anything up besides the PS3 to the cable, it has no output.

So, I guess this thread can be considered as solved, though it looks like I'll have to spend $4 on another HDMI cable.
