Looking for a decent bar in NYC to celebrate my 21st.
Welp, I'm turning 21 in October, and to celebrate it I'm looking for something a little more exciting than drinking in a dorm room with my friends. I'm about a 35 minute train ride from the city, so I'm looking to celebrate it there.
So far the only bar that's perked my interest is Nevada Smiths. I'm not looking for anything too crazy, just a kind of place I can sit and relax with four or five of my friends and toss 'em back through the night.
I don't know much about NYC bars, but you're going to have to be more specific if you want people to make suggestions. What kind of atmosphere do you want, what kind of crowd, what kind of music, drinks, etc

I'm looking for a more relaxed atmosphere, and I'm mainly looking to avoid the NYU hangouts. I guess you could say I'm looking for more of a dive bar more than anything.
A dive bar I used to frequent is b-sides on 13th and Ave B. Very chill atmosphere, friendly bartenders and regulars, great jukebox, and a fooseball table in the back.

If you and your boys are looking to pick up some ladies, head to Mad River (82nd and 3rd) or Saloon(85th and York?). They're pretty standard 21st birthday joints.
If you're looking to lounge Verlaine (Rivington between Essix and Ludlow) is where its at. $3 Yeungs and $5 Sangrias till 10PM.
If you want a dive bar, there are 100s on the lower east side.
There are literally thousands of bars in Manhattan. Get as specific as you want. It's there.
on your 21st you need to bar hop... so you can get cheap and plentiful booze at a dive, and still enjoy a good time (and attractive companionship) at more upscale places... i'd hit at least 3 or 4 bars... and you might want to look into finding a place to crash for the night in the city... having to trek back to jersey (or wherever) when shitfaced fucking sucks
one recommendation: definitely hit up one of the fancy rooftop bars... IMHO it's necessary to have stupidly overpriced drinks in the company of models while being on top of the city at night on your 21st
that said, i live in Brooklyn, so if you feel like slumming it on the other side of the river, here are some of my favorites:
Dutch Kills Bar - it's in LIC, but it's the 1st stop out of manhattan on the E, V, G, and 7... so easy to get to... and they have AMAZING cocktails... literally, they're master mixologists - http://www.dutchkillsbar.com/
Union Hall - this is in Park Slope, and much more of a chill/hangout place... great lounge area (with fireplace).. indoor bocce court, good food, and a live performance area downstairs with decent bands on weekends

I've been hesitant to check that place out. The on tap looks hot. Is it infested with hipsters? I'm not going to brooklyn if there are going to be hipsters there.

Oh yeah and I forgot the Delancey. Always a good time there. You can book a table on the roof garden, it's well worth the $10 roof cover that they randomly charge. Just call ahead.

Try looking into Gingerman in Manhattan. Unbelievable selection. Might be a good place to start out at then head off into the night.
Also a warning about Barcade. The wolf guy on Rampage can't move right. Joystick is busted (or it was back in March).
Oh god the Continental is a DISASTER. Any time you go there you know that you're night is about to get really sloppy.
The lower east side in general has a lot of great bars. I recommend Zum Schneider if you're looking for a place with great beer where you can talk. Please Don't Tell is fun if you make a reservation, but it's not a good place if you're bar hopping. If you're looking for dive bars you can go almost anywhere in the city. Williamsburg is a good bet.
And Barcade is really, really hipster. But still fun.

Great beer and brauts, weinerschnitzel, utterbrauhten, nice little family establishment in the heart of the village.
