So I get home today and hop on my computer. I start chatting with some people on Gaim and before long someone sends me a link which i click and Opera opens up and gives me an error about not being connected to the internet... So i copy the link and try in IE, same result. I sign off Gaim and reboot and the same thing is happening. I can get on Gaim but not any websites. So i boot up my MacBook Pro and click the safari icon and BAM apple.com loads up via WiFi. Anyway, i reset my DSL modem and wireless router. Same thing again... wtf. So i change the ethernet cables and phone cables. Same thing... so i figure maybe it's a DNS error and i try typing in the IP address to connect still doesn't work, I give up.

Here's my setup. Wall jack to DSL modem, DSL modem to Netgear wireless router and then router wired to the desktop (The one with the weirdness.). Then I have my Wii and Mac connecting to the internet via the wireless signal and they work just fine. Oh also i can't connect from my desktop to my laptop via the network. Any ideas?

Set everything back up from scratch, I'm talking your router and your PC. Try pinging IPs (google.com: 64.233.167.99, 72.14.207.99, 64.233.187.99) rather than visiting sites to ensure it's not just HTTP that's been barfed.

Wait, what gives you error 66? Screenshot/copy and paste?

Also, are you able to ping/access your router/modem?

When i ping out it gives me "unable to ping: error 66". If i had my thumb drive on me i'd take a Screen and pop it on my mac and upload it but i can't right now. No, I cannot ping or connect to the router but i can get on Aim. Seems odd to me.

If you look under the status of your connection whats it say? More specifically under the support tab what are the Address Type, IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway. Also found out what IP the mac notebook is getting and what IP the router is from there then trying pinging that.

Also error 66? Are you using the cmd prompt and then ping <ip address> because I'm attempting to get any sort of error and no matter the address I give it I just get either destination host unreachable, if my Ethernet is unplugged or request timed out.

If you can't get to your router, AIM shouldn't be working at all, since you can't even get traffic to your first piece of network equipment.

    Very strange.

Also, I can't seem to find any descriptions for an error 66. There's a 65, but no 66. Details on 65 are here, and suggest removing your firewall from your startup. I'd try disabling your firewall too, and if you run Zonealarm, to remove it completely, as traffic still passes through the firewall, even if it's set to allow all traffic through.

I turned off all my firewalls and i never even had zone alarm. The Mac is getting an internal IP of 192.168.0.5 and the desktop is getting 192.168.0.3, same as always. I try to ping my router at 192.168.1.1 which is the address i gave it when i set it up a year ago. The mac just connects and is happy, the PC gives me that weird error code in Command prompt.

I think I remember seeing something like this on a Windows XP system that got its TCP/IP stack bunged up. Try rebuilding yours by opening a command prompt and running the following:
    netsh int ip reset

I typed that code in and it asked me to "specify parameters".

But anyway, It is error code 65 not 66 like i had thought. So the Microsoft website claims that is a firewall issue but I don't have any firewalls installed. I'm not sure I ever did, my router has one but that would affect all the computers, even the ones on WiFi right? Anyone else have any experience with the mysterious code 65?
