[DnD 4e PbP] Keep on Shadowfellin' [OOC/IC] JELLY SANDWICH!
So what did the thief make out with? Also, I just did it for kicks and am not trying to get a leg up on everyone loot-wise. I'll be perfectly happy if whatever I nabbed (or didn't) isn't useful for Fritz. If you feel like allowing fritz to steal a magical weapon or armor just drop one of the loot tables to keep everything perfectly even. Also, if he doesn't find anything that is obviously a magical item or something quite valuable, he won't be stealing it. No sense in getting weighed down with junk. He will take half of the gold in the safe. If there is one and there is gold inside.
I'm holding off on stating what Fritz acquired for right now; this doesn't make a whole lot of difference anyway since only Fritz knows. I think if I were DMing this at table rather than PbP I would put it off till next week's session, this is a similar course of action.
Ok No problem. So I'm guessing he's gotten away clean then.
I'm good to go then. Fritz, actually will be waking up VERY early, and insisting that the party all rise and make on their ways before (hopefully) anyone notices anything has gone missing.
Sorry, been under a lot of stress the last few days and I don't know why. It's probably a bad sign that it took me several hours just to post here.
Progress seems kinda erratic in this thread (like, it'll stop for a day or two, then move really quickly for a day or two), so if someone needs a response from me feel free to PM me or contact me on AIM - I'm pretty much always on.
Thom, having followed Fritz at a semi-safe distance, now stands outside the smithy the rogue is occupying. He wasn't really that suspicious, but... okay, that's a lie - he was plenty suspicious, and was (pardon the unfortunate turn of phrase) keeping an eye on him. It wouldn't do to have the rogue locked in some small town's jail, so he was there making sure nothing happened to him.
Or that the rogue didn't happen to anything else, whatever the case may be.
Can't think of any way to follow up on it without being incredibly intrusive. Besides, the potential consequences are funnier.
Ok I can't think of why anyone wouldn't be ready at this point so I'm going to go ahead and post a "wake up" reply.
Fritz wasn't keen on waking up to the town militia poking around his room. So, before the sun rose Fritz woke, donned his gear and stowed his new possessions before he went about rousing the others.
"Early bird gets the worm, right Thom?!"
"Shake off that wine sleep Thaladh! We have adventures to seek!"
"Come, come professors! We have a big day ahead of us and we must set out early!"

"I fully endorse an early beginning," yawned Professor Fighum as he stamped into a boot, "but dawn's light would be a welcome accompaniment. Can we temper your enthusiasm enough to enjoy Widow Wrafton's steaming oatmeal before retaking the cold trail?"
I hope I didn't go too far removing Mr. Wrafton from the living. I just liked the sound of "Widow Wrafton," and we haven't seen him yet, so...just let me know if I should edit that.
Also, I'll try to work it into a character post soon, but I agree with TiamatZ that Dragon Hill would be a nice detour on our way to the keep.
"Oatmeal? Ah.. fine, but lets be fast about it. I grow tired of this hamlet. The sooner we hit that trail the better."

The group gathered in Wrafton’s common room, the table lit by lanterns. “The wizard Valurum spoke of dragons.” Professor Fighum spread the rough map across the table, holding the rolled corners down with empty bowls. “Our keep, here, has gone through many inhabitants, but the original were devotees of Bahamut. And here is Dragon Hill”--a tiny, frosty dragon appeared on the map nearby--“formed from the body of a Frost dragon that died centuries ago.” The ghostly, mouse-sized dragon slumps, then melts into the topography.
“We’ve already encountered kobolds, and Padraig did not seem surprised by this. If they have any strength in the area, then Dragon Hill will be a holy site for them, and will doubtless hold signs to their lair. At the very least, it seems outlandish that there would be no connection between the dragon’s skeleton and the keep. “
The first rays of sunlight crest Winterhaven’s wooden palisade.
“I suggest we mirror Fritz’s eagerness and visit Dragon Hill before we proceed to the keep.”
"I'm not sure what it has to do with our quest, couldn't that just be some random coincidence? It isn't as if there aren't dragon corpses strewn across Faerun. But perhaps at least we can sharpen our tactics there before we tackle the keep. If we're all finished lets be off!"
As the party moves out of the little town the more insightful members might notice Fritz on the look out for some perceived threat. Thieving in this tiny country towns has it's risks, as the list of suspects is quite small. Luckily it seemed that he'd pulled off last nights job quite professionally.

"I've learned that coincidences have a way of finding connections to each other," opined the professor as the group spread out along the road. Fighum stayed near the rear, walking with apparent casualness (though his eyes stayed alert).
I probably won't have PA access until later on Wednesday, so please don't wait for me.

Thaladh fills and refills his waterskin, staying silent as he fights his first hangover in months. That dwarf was so boring.
...
How much ale did I end up drinking, anyway?
...
That scruffy human owes me one. I'll have to find out what he needed a distraction for.
...
Might want to wait to catch him alone. He seemed to want to be circumspect around the others, dragging me into the forest like that.
...
This isn't the way to the keep. Where the hell are we going?
"Sorry, I wasn't myself this morning. Why are we heading away from the keep again?"
"Eh, the professor's want to look at a dragon skeleton. They think maybe we'll find some kobolds or something there. I hope we do personally, or I'm liable to complain until we reach the keep..."
Remembering his half drank jug of wine Fritz unshoulders his pack while walking and fishes the jug out. He uncorks it and pours some down his throat.
"Who's weary feet need some stimulation? Eh? Eh?" He takes another swig and begins to sing with much bravado but very poorly.

Thaladh moves swiftly to get the rogue's attention, lifting the little man off the ground. "Friend, if you want to sing as we travel, I suggest you learn how."
"Wha- Eh! Put me down, gods damnit!!" Fritz, apparently not fond of being hoisted up off the ground pushes off the elf's shoulder.
"Bah, fine. I'll not sing then. I thought you were a merry elf? Don't like songs then?" He corks his jug and moves off into the woods a bit perhaps if they were ambushed again he could use the tree line to sneak up on some kobolds.
Thom winces at the end of Fritz' 'performance'. "Godsdammit, Fritz, I agree with him- can the singing if you don't know how. Some of us have more sensitive hearing than the others."
He shudders. "You're lucky we're in the middle of nowhere. If we were still in town, I'm sure that would have shattered glass."
I think it's hard for someone not to rage at mario kart, while shouting "Fuck you Donkey Kong. Whose dick did you suck to get all those red shells?"

"Why do you look so concerned about Winterhaven Fritz?", Yuriel asked as he looked to the whole debacle between the rogue and the elf.
"Chances are we will have to return to Winterhaven. I mean we only have enough supplies to last us at most 10 days. Since Winterhaven's the closest town here, we'll have to come back sometime. I mean Light! The Keep itself would probably take us a few days to go through, if it's as big as Fighum's map showed us."
But something else bothered Yuriel. Kobolds were well known to worship dragons (mostly as demigods and such tripe) and this was a dragon's grave they were going to. Sure, five or six kobolds weren't that much of a threat, but if it's as holy a place to them as a church of Pelor is to the defenders of light and justice, chances are they would fight a large group of kobolds.
"I want everyone to be at the ready for when things get dicey. Who knows what we'll find at the grave..."
Yuriel readies his spear for just in case.
Fritz is lucky that my passive insight is terrible...
"Eh Winterhaven? The place is boring. And I might have borrowed a few things from the black smith. Just tell them I died when you go back. It'll be fine. 'Sides kobold's have to eat too. I'm sure they will have some supplies there. You really think it'll take us more than a couple days to clear out a ruined old keep?"
Fritz half shouts from about 10 into the woods, somewhere off to the right.

"It's difficult to estimate how long it will take, while we have only a vague idea of what awaits us. According to the wizard Valurum, the keep has had many architects and even more occupants, which probably means closed, buried and hidden passages and even strata."
"Regardless, if we want to retrieve hard-earned bounties from Padraig and Valurum, we'll have to return to Winterhaven."
Anticipating the crest of Dragon Hill's appearance over the horizon as you draw nearer, the party instead stumbles upon the location almost before they've even realized it. A first sight it seemed as if the hill had inverted itself; instead of rising about the surrounding land, it dipped below it, forming an ugly gouge in the earth. Peering into the pit, you see scores of scaly humanoids scurrying to and fro. Their hands clasp Kobold sized pickaxes which they assault the side of the pit with. They are humming a work song with surprisingly unsinister lyrics. A pair of Kobolds are seated at the lip of the pit, gazing at the surrounding countryside alertly. Suddenly, one shrieks in alarm, and all the other Kobolds present look up and turn to see what he is pointing at.
Fritz is on move as soon as the kobold spots them. He takes the high ground to the right and with his sling whilring he loosens a bullet but fly wide off mark. He curses halfheartedly and shrugs.

A Kobold hefts a miniature spear with little success.
From their lofty perch, the two Kobold lookouts fire at the tempting target of the slightly paunchy wizard. One finds it's mark, drawing a groan from Fighum. The two slingers begin to argue about which of them hit and which missed.
My PC has been bluescreening unexpectedly the last couple days, so until I can figure out what's causing it I think I'll be posting and editing my posts piece by piece so I don't lose the whole massive thing unexpectedly. I'll add a little message to the top of the post indicating when the post is complete, I guess? It's not perfect, but it'll help me out alot.

Yuriel cautiously moves a few feet to the vicious drakes, while drawing out his arcane rod. While the beast was distracted by Thom, Yuriel quickly drives the spear to the beast’s ribs.
Unfortunately, the beast’s instincts for survival kicked in, and dodged the spear in a split second!
Light! I’m really starting to hate these kobolds…
Move Action: Shift to Y12 Minor: Might as well draw out my rod, since my spear is out already... Standard Action: Magic Weapon (At-will) on drake: MISS! (11 vs AC)

Before combat, an artificer spends time infusing his or her allies' magic items with curative energy. Whenever one of the artificer's allies uses a magic item's daily power, that ally absorbs the energy and gains 4 temporary hit points.
Also posting this up, so if anyone wants to spend their weapon power, just say so (ONLY 1 PERSON!!!)
IMPART ENERGY
You recharge the daily power of a magic item. An item can be recharged only once per day in this way.
"What claim have you sssoftsskins to thissss ssssite?" shouts one of the Kobolds (the slyblade). "Forward, my kobold comradesss! Defend what is yoursss!"

“A-ha! I suspected we’d find kobolds here. Why do you disturb the resting bones of this white wyrm, whom you claim to revere?” the professor calls to the apparent leader.
“But first, let’s create some room for conversation.” The professor claps his hands together with a loud crack. He separates them, and his mystic orb is now held tightly between his palms. As his hands delineate a large circle before him, he winks at Thom: “You’ll remember this one.” He completes the circle with a forward thrust of the hands holding the orb.

As the professor sends the two mindless creatures flying away from him, Thaladh casts about for a worthy opponent. Seeing none nearby, he reaches behind him and draws his bow. Nocking an arrow, aiming, and firing in one smooth action, he shouts, "Coward! Come forth and face me!" His arrow flies straight and true, and the shocked kobold is barely able to scramble away from the bell. The arrow thuds into the earth where the kobold stood, digging deep into the earth.
I did say to PM me if you needed me. It doesn't help that once again I forgot to check the thread.
Thom moves up a bit closer to the drakes, mentally cursing the professor for shoving them away. Did he think I needed more of a challenge on top of being blind? He then swung for one, the swing echoing strangely as it did.
Moving to X9, Booming blade on the southern drake:
Also, a request or two for the maps in the future:
1. Can you make the grid markers (the lettering/numbering for the grid markers) either a better color or more distinct from the backdrop? They're very hard to see.
2. Can you put the "A/B" labels onto the tokens on the map so they can be distinguished? Making them distinct in the turn rotation's fine, but it doesn't help if I can't tell which is which if they should move away from each other.
If it makes the map too difficult to read, perhaps you might want to make two maps - one which just shows everyone's positions and is the one you post on the forums directly, and then a larger one which you hotlink which has all the labels, grid markers, etc.
Sorry guys, PC trouble has been keeping me from updating. I'll be posting the big batch of enemy actions this weekend; which day of the weekend, I cannot say. I may even have to go shopping for a new HD first.
Finally, everything is all set, reinstalled, etc etc. Now to get to rolling for that big batch of...huh. Didn't see Fritz there. Whoops.
Thanks for your patience, guys, I should be back to keeping schedules starting today. I'll have the enemies' next actions posted practically immediately after Fritz's.
A pair of diminuative Kobolds advance, creating a defensive line between you and their leader. Kobold sized javelins are hurled in your general direction. Very "general" direction.
Ok, now I should be getting things back to speed. Don't give up on me just yet, guys!
The Kobolds seem most interested in placing themselves between you and the excavated bones. The unleashed drakes, however eagerly advance to snap at whatever exposed flesh they encounter.
For their part, the slingers seem content to hold their high ground and await a better target.
Kobolds advance and attack with spears, javelins, and teeth, while the southernmost Kobold double moves. Bad rolls ensure no one lands a blow, however. Movement is shown on the map.
Fritz aim, however, is sure and true, and reduces their number by one. Meanwhile, Thom strikes at the drakes as they pass him and scores a hit for his efforts.
Opportunity attacks by Thom against the drakes: one success against Drake B for 9 damage.

A few steps back from the front line allow the professor to spy a couple kobolds creeping into Thom’s blindside while he focuses on the drakes.
The orb between his hands glows orange.
“Naughty beasties, trying to take advantage of a blind man!” The orb seems to glow brighter and grow larger in Fighum’s hands. When it’s roughly the size of a melon, he tosses it high into the air where—WHUMPPHH—it erupts in flame. The three kobolds nearest Thom watch the flaming orb cross the apex of its trajectory and fall among them, where it bursts into a fiery assault that engulfs each of them.
All hit! (I didn't roll damage because I suspect these three are minions. If I'm wrong, let me know and I'll edit appropriately.) Kobolds in U7, W8 & W9 will trouble us no more.
When the flare recedes from everyone's vision, ash and a couple warped metal buckles is all that can be seen where the kobolds had stood.
