most of my stuff won't work on them since most of it is in windows media format. i loath all macs and all mac products. looks like they got some interesting hardware but am more concerned with what is under the hood, so to speak. (the os)
i shall not be converted.

You don't need a mac os to use an ipod you know...
And itunes should be able to convert your windows media files into mp3 with no problem.
That said, cost could still be an issue with an ipod.
I'm not sure this person would be happy with any of our suggestions given his dislike of the zune and the ipod for some what arbitrary reasons.
I mean, he immediately rules out the two best portable media layers on the market - better by an astronomical margin - and expresses a dislike of them based on fallacious reasoning.
Yeah, I don't really see what advice we can give here except "you are wrong about both the Zune and the iPod. Keep your Zune and learn to use it properly".
Then you'll probably want something from Creative ZEN.
I don't know why you're so against ipods and zunes, but I can tell you from personal experience all though ipods are amazingly fun, I've had two video ipods die on me and one ipod shuffle. Also the headphones break all the fucking time. So buy some third party ones.
Yeah, I had two Zunes, and I manually managed everything on it. I loate automatic syncing. I felt I had full control through the software. If you don't want any software, and want a drag and drop folder as if it were a usb thumb drive, then there are a few on the market. If you don't require that though, the Zune will do what you want.
Cowon players are pretty good. I have a Cowon D2 which worked pretty well up until I dropped it on a chair leg and the touch screen broke. They get great battery life (it'd usually last me through four workdays or so) and I've generally heard that Cowon has the best sound quality on the market (better than my Rio Carbon; I've never owned an iPod, so I can't say about that). I think the largest size is 16 GB, but it includes an SD card slot which can expand your player to at least 32 GB for fairly cheap; you may be able to go higher, but I'm not sure. The thing is completely drag and drop, too. The only qualms I had were with the interface, which was a bit finicky, and the fact that the player turns off if it's been paused or stopped for more than 15 seconds.
Sound quality is top notch and they know how make nice portable players with long battery life and super fast recharge time. OLED screens does not hurt either.
Sony has recently taken back the #1 market share spot in Japan and while it's their home market there is more than that behind them beating Apple.
I did get a 120 GB zune before posting this topic to give it a shot. It is still within its return for a full refund time limit. However, when you drag 1 pic onto it, it takes the whole folder with it. If there is a way to stop it from doing this, I will keep it. Anyone know how to do this or if it can be done since the thing didn't come with instructions. Also, is there a way to delete stuff off of it without resyncing a folder and then unsyncing it and telling it to remove all the things in that folder from the zune?
Looking for a mp3 player that is larger than 32GB, is not a zune, is not an iPod, and will not break the bank.
If you cannot find one larger than 32GB, what is the best 32GB player?
Recently got a zune and am returning it. Too much automatic syncing and not enough user control. I die before I own an iPod.
I totally agree with you about the IPod. They're insanely priced.
I have a 2 GB Walkman that I got for $30, which works awesomely enough for everything I want to do - which is basically to play This American Life, Planet Money, and other podcasts as I run around in the gym.
I looked on Sony's website, however, and was only able to find a single 32GB video/mp3 player, and it was $400 (out of your price range, I'd imagine).
If you don't really care about the actual drive size and money is more important to you (I know I'd rather save $180), the Sony Walkmans are excellent cheap little guys that I highly recommend.
i made a thread a while back about this subject and was directed to the creative zen vision:m. 30g, plays music & video & has an fm tuner & a voice memo recorder.

you have to have your zune connected to the program
do this
and in this one, see how i have it set to "date added"? this skips the album process and lets you add pictures by date. i have had no problems when using this view.

this did help! ty! it is actually my sis who is looking for an mp3 player. she has a 30 GB creative zen vision: m that is about to die. i posted this topic to help her find another mp3 player since she wasn't having any luck on her own.
btw, she decided to keep the zune. this advice helped out a lot! they really need to put in instructions for a $250 gizmo.
If you're fundamentally opposed to iPods for whatever reason, you could take a look here.
Despite it's somewhat suspicious name, it's basically just a website examining everything besides iPod. There's also an extremely useful comparison tool with a number of different models listed.
1) they have the same 'features' as the iPods, but without the crappy software (just drag and drop or use almost any media player of your choice, winamp, windows media player, etc)
2) they have good batteries unlike some iPod models.
3) expandable with micro sd cards which is awesome.
4) FM Radio.
5) higher quality (in my opinion) at half the price (they make their own memory; so that is probably part of it)

I'm not a mac person by any means but I pretty much love my 80 gb ipod.

the zune is an awesome device, i implore you reconsider.
that's why we call it the struggle, you're supposed to sweat
