Any [chat]ers hardcore into the MP3 player scene? I keep seeing that Sony OLED player and I wants it bad! Convince me to not get it (as I already have a perfectly functional MP3 player)!
Edit: _J_ Can't see the image
There's an MP3 player scene? o_O What do they argue about? How quickly the player decodes the MP3?
There's a lot people expect from an MP3 player. Capacity, flash vs HDD, UI and how customizable it is, sound quality, whether there's an equalizer, how big the screen is, how big the resolution of the screen is, what the battery life is for both music and video, what video and audio formats does it support and do you have to convert video before it will display properly on the device, does it have WiFi, does it have Bluetooth, how much does it cost, is it worth the price and should you wait?

Man, iPods and Zunes aren't a part of the scene. They're too mainstream for that. The scene deals with Cowon, iRiver, Sandisk, and all the other underdogs.

After reading the Head-Fi forums I bought an iRiver Clix2. It's a really nice device. Its AMOLED screen is beautiful and the themes are flash-based so you can create new ones easily. You navigate the menus by clicking the sides of the screen down.
Just get an iPod Touch. It can surf the internets!
I really don't like iPods, though. I had a 2nd gen for a long time, but ... meh.
The iPod Touch is really pretty different from iPods.
Eh... I may dick around with one in a store if I see one, but it seems to me to basically be an iPod with a touchscreen. I wouldn't use the wifi feature probably at all and video playback holds no interest for me.
Just sucks that I think iPods are the only MP3 player I can really get here without having to use some stupid software (can use foobar2k, winamp, etc), and will support album art (which is something mine supports, but I'm not going to go through my entire goddamn music collection to add album art manually to the files >.<)

I think the iPhone is the perfect convergent device, though. It replaces almost every function of my desktop computer. I can browse the Internet, use AIM, use IRC if I wanted to buy the application which I don't, play games (so many good games), listen to music, watch videos, check my mail, check Twitter. Data connectivity through a cellular network is just too convenient. It's so much better than using a normal Pocket PC and relying on Wifi. Reading the news or books on the iPhone is preferred to my PC, as well, because I'm less distracted and I can do it while laying down or sitting on the couch.
I obviously wouldn't replace my desktop with an iPhone but it does all of these things quite well.
Actually, is there a free program that can embed album art into the file? Or is that a bad idea?

monthly fee
did you have to pay a deposit, if so how much (if you don't mind, I realize this could be I dunno, something certain people wouldn't answer)
what was the actual cost of the phone since I don't even know that off the top of my head
basically I'm trying to estimate how much money I am from having one because I want badly. and my friend just got one.
edit - want because I agree with your post, it has hit a level where it does everything I'd want that kind of item to do and I'm willing to pay to have that.

No deposit for me. $99 for iPhone 3G, $199 for 16 GB iPhone 3GS, $299 for 32 GB iPhone 3GS. That's if you don't have AT&T or are eligible for the upgrade.

with itunes there's a script that automatically finds the artwork for you. Do you mean that kind of thing?
I have a lot of album art downloaded and saved in the folders themselves. I want to embed the art that I already have in the file so maybe I can get album art to show up on my MP3 player.
Also, I don't really trust iTunes to find some of my music, although there is a Japanese store (I heard) so it might work that way.
Edit: I've used MediaMonkey for some of it, but doing that manually for 40 gb of music is, needless to say, slow.

beyond that itunes can find the artwork for lots of stuff I do believe if you manually add the artowkr to a song file it embeds in the file itself.
not sure that it will work on any mp3 player but it may be worth a shot.

I'm really enjoying the first bit of Die Hard 4. The CCR conversation and the line about 'When's the last time you turned on the radio and listened to popular music. Just give me a decade."

Monthly fees vary depending on your plan. I have a family plan which actually saves us a lot of money but you might be looking for an individual plan. The lowest plan, at 450 minutes, is forty dollars a month. Add to that the required thirty dollar a month iPhone data plan and you are looking at seventy dollars a month before fees and taxes and any add-ons like text messages (unlimited text messages for an individual plan costs 20 dollars a month). There is also a one-time activation fee that's something like twenty-six dollars.
Deposits depend on your credit but it's hard to say even having said that. I didn't have to pay a deposit but I've heard stories where people who have had good credit were required to pay deposits. This may be a case where going to the Apple store instead of AT&T would decrease the likelihood of paying a deposit although I'm not sure. From what I've read deposits range from $200-$1000.
The iPhone 3G S costs $199 for the 16GB version (white or black) and $299 for the 32GB version (white or black). This price is only for new customers or for existing customers who have built up sufficient credit towards an upgrade although you might have trouble getting that price even with credit. I don't know much about it since I'm a new customer but last time I read up on it it was a crapshoot. The iPhone 3G costs $99 and only comes in black.
To be honest, if I wasn't doing a family plan I would have had difficulty convincing myself that the device was worth the cost. The individual plans, in my opinion, are rip-offs. Having said that, now that I've used the device for almost a month I'm really glad I bought it and I would probably keep it if I ever switched to an individual plan.

... There's an app for the iPhone where you can access the WoW armory?
...
It just came out today, and yeah. You can access character sheets, talent calculators, item databases, guild calendar, achievement leaderboards, guild rosters, main page news, all kinds of shit.

it's the reason I bought whatever I bought when I did though... damn I can't remember.
can I rockbox it
The iPod Touch is really pretty different from iPods.
i forgot how Fedorable Fedor is.
I just use my iPhone now, though.
the voice recognition ipod control thing is handy
instead of dicking about with lists and shit i can be like "play playlist Rock" or "play artist Led Zeppelin" and it will just do that

But those are definitely balls.
It really is. I was quite surprised when I got mine quite how different it was, and how useful it was above and beyond being a "mp3" player.
Then again, due to student milarky, mine only cost me £20. I'm not sure I would have payed the full wack for it otherwise.
I obviously wouldn't replace my desktop with an iPhone but it does all of these things quite well.
Edit: Go ahead.

I wouldn't call it a script. It's really just a function that you click on that goes out and tries to find all the album art work.

I was talking about a script I got from doug's scripts that searches about on the interwebs. I don't really know what itunes itself does.
Recommend me a game on steam.
Audiosurf!
The cheapest plan, I believe, is about $70 bucks without taxes. Oh, and there is a $36 activation fee.
I know about the fee.
I actually think I can get a discounted plan because I work at radioshack but obviously I'd have to ask at a store about that.
I'm not doing shit tomorrow maybe I'll go out and find out. not be a lazy shit.

You just need to make sure the album art you embed is your player's supported resolution.
Under Advanced (at least on OS X), there's a option labeled "Get Album Artwork" that scours the interwebs for the album art work.
The part I like about that is when he says "When you're this close they always look like landscapes."
And no one pauses to ask how he knows that. They just move on.
the only pain in the ass is I'm going to have to find out what my deposit is which involves running my credit, which hurts it as I understand.
also, not that I'd ever really use this but I'd have to buy/download it
