Back to game action though. I have an interesting bridge for JC's ideas and the players that disagree.
Since it appears a vet will be the Cap'n, why not let a newbie be the first mate?
Then we get the vet coverage and the newbie gets the pressure of knowing they may have to act, but only in an emergency. That should cut down on the "whoops my bad" factor yet hopefully work around the grudge factor that might affect the vet.
Thoughts?

Simply leaving what could play an important role in the hands of chance is a huge risk.
I would say look over the player list, find a person you work well with, get along with, etc and choose them.
