The future kinda blows sometimes.
Traffic light cameras
The ability to work from an airplane
Our amazing capacity to use corn for everything
Plants that don't make seeds

A magician gives you a ring that, when worn, will let you see the world as it truly is.
However, the ring will never leave your finger, and you will be unable to ever describe to another living person what you see.

They don't account for stupid shit going on outside the box
Like if some idiot is sitting in the oncoming lane and you don't catch it in time, welp, looks like you get a ticket
or if the dip after the intersection turns out to be flooded
that sort of thing

on the one hand, shit like the Kindle and Nook are just awesome as hell. Thousands of books, right there? it's the future
on the other, a shelf full of books is just such a satisfying sight, and sometimes the feel of a book is part of the entertainment
also the smell and heft.
i am all for technology but i cannot foresee myself buying an ebook reader at any near time
What about if Kindles and Nooks emitted an "old book" smell and were leather-bound?

I got a droid [phone] the other day, the motorola one.
Turns out these things (android phones in general) are able to listen to you speak, transcribe what you just spoke into text, then translate that text into another language, and then synthesize that translation into voice. I can ask a question, and a second later have the phone ask it in Spanish, French, German, whatever.

That is fucking awesome.
C-3po just went obsolete to a tiny little cellphone
I'm waiting for the day they begin converting all the asphalt in Los Angeles into mini generators that power the city using the kinetic energy of cars driving over them. I think they had a couple streets that did this in England or something, I can't remember.

the key for the future is in better planned, more widely available public transit
this is my opinion as a voice on the internet
I'm down with that
we need to build a national light rail system that goes at supersonic speeds
or something crazy like that
some kind of super fast rail system to complement the interstate system. And eventually replace all of the damn tractor-trailers getting 8mpg downhill with a tailwind while drafting
i'm not sure what we would do with the thousands and thousands of truckers though.
reminder that high-speed rail in the united states has been defined at capping at 100km/h lol
i thought you were leaving.
jk
yeah, i know. A rail system that actually goes places and connects cities quickly and is cheaper than driving the car I already own the same distance would be neat.
did that proposition in California pass to create a high speed rail corridor between LA and San Fransisco? that is a good idea its too bad CA is like hella broke.
It passed
I voted against it
all the fucking spending bills passed, and none of the fucking "here is how we pay for all this shit" bills passed
I will vote to legalize pot so stoners will no longer have anything to talk about
I like the future. Vacuum cleaning robots at Bed Bath and Beyond, bionic suits, stealth drones, anything on ThinkGeek
But I hate that, in this thread, we are currently talking about trains in the US as if it was some pie in the sky idea. Like, the things our grandparents rode on, a mode of transport they used before they cured TB and smallpox, and we can't fathom getting an infrastructure in place to make it work
We were able to transport tons of iron across a massive desert filled with mountains, fighting savage injuns and dysentery, and somehow get the pieces to all fit together, and in the age of Google Earth we can't fucking put up a high-speed corridor between two cities that are, relative to the rest of the nation, right next door.

It's the greatest.
If that ain't the future then I don't know what is.
There is nothing more frustrating than knowing technology is cheap and available, but people still aren't using it.
like digital distribution
and more efficient travel
Well the thread title does straight up say "no flying cars in 2010"
we need, like, that tube shit from futurama, or straight up teleporters, or something
Man, I would love that shit, just passing like 50 feet over the interstate watching all the suckers beneath me
That little dude just keeps on truckin'
Letting them fly would be a disaster
