I hope more of the game is like Starbase 24 and less of the away missions. Maneuvering to present your strongest shield facing while being pounded by Klingon birds of preys and battlecruisers in the hopes your engineering or evasive abilities come off their cooldowns is compelling stuff. Does anyone have experience with the ship types past the starter Mirandas? Just how much more different is the handling and durability of the cruisers and escorts compared to it?

While the Shattner rolls are amusing visually, I think the small arms based ground combat would have worked better with some sort of cover system.

    EDIT:

Oh, and 3K damage quantum torpedo crits on unshielded cruisers leaves a very satisfying feeling.

    EDIT2:

Additional dumb question - Ships can perform tighter turns at lower speed at the expense of being easier to hit?

How the hell do you already have Quantum Torpedoes?

So I got an email this morning that said I had an "exclusive" beta key. I jump through all the hoops and, lo and behold, there are no remaining keys available. I understand that most people who were part of this same promotion got their keys yesterday. Well, at least I'll have the client downloaded and ready to go, I guess.

Umm...According to the bright, bold, yellow text presented when talking to the NPC all Fleet action rewards are currently disabled. Unless it was a drop, in which case, youre a lucky man. I'm starting to think my login has drops disabled. Well, you know, except for the bacon and eggs all those Klingons carry around while patroling. In which case I'm a dick for fucking up breakfast.

Champions had one, so I'm sure STO will as well. I'm not sure how long after release CO waited til though.

I wonder how a guy that size would work in ground combat pvp. Specifically if ledges that come up to most peoples arms, would actually provide him cover, keeping him from being shot at.

autofire by right clicking on that command in the hotbar, this works for both on the ground and in space

Isn't the entire reason you have an open beta to buttfuck your servers in ways you never expected them to?
Yes. Stress tests are vital. Especially because you don't want your first stress test to happen on go-live day. We had to "fix the glitch" once on a guy who didn't get that concept after about six months of one spectacular roll out after another. We'd have just reassigned him, but he was falsifying the damn test case diaries.

Today, everyone is a Klingon. GO!
Seriously. I'd have people testing the shit out of the level up mechanics and all tiers of missions. However, they probably realize if people did that then they'd play the entire game during the beta and not pay.
    kildy wrote: »
This is apparently the build before the build CB was testing this weekend. Which is a really odd choice, but torpedo buffs cannon nerfs and all are not in this build iirc.
There were a lot of issues with the build used this past weekend, so the roll-back is probably the best idea.

how interesting... I got a set of body armor to drop off one of the first quests. It looks a lot like my uniform, but tighter (:winky:) and made of chrome. Directx 9 gogo! (I also managed to clip my head through a catwalk and got myself stuck, my fleetmate had to finish the mission so I could beam out without restarting or quitting or what have you)

If I get something later on down the road that is flashy fluorescent orange or has spikes coming out of the shoulders with skulls on them, I will put an axe through my monitor.

    Some thoughts then

-It's fun. Very fun! And surprisingly well built! It's still a bit rough around the edges, but for the amount of development time they had on it they've done extremely well. There's alot in the game (the galaxy map is HUGE and looks like it has room for expansion). I'm impressed.

-Ship battles are AWESOME, especially if you have a fleet of other ships with you, or are battling it with multiple enemies. There's more tactics to it than meets the eye, especially when it comes to maintaining shields and shifting about so you don't get destroyed. Ships rightfully feel heavy and difficult to turn unless evasive is used.

-Bridge officers is a rather novel idea and certainly presents a new experience. I'm almost reminded of guild wars henchmen made more advanced. The ability to use their skills and my own really helps in ship battles.

-Ground combat i'd say is also really fun but a bit more rough. It's obvious it needs some work done, particularly in the area of improving movement. Characters feel too sluggish and combat situations feel odd. I'd imagine though improvement will come soon enough.

-Missions so far have been entertaining enough for me to continue. STO does a good job of keeping you playing and has got the Torchlight method of making you play and then realising it's 2am and you should REALLY SLEEP NOW!

    Couple of gripes:

-The chat system needs overhauled. Somebody in the chat explained to me about tabs and how i could order my stuff tabular wise (thank you to whoever that was, was someone in PA). A bit more explanation would be beneficial.

-Linked to the chat problem, instance teams are really fun, but would be better if people chatted, and i suspect people aren't chatting because they don't know about the tabular stuff.

-Skill allocation, BO skill buying et al all feels a little daunting and difficult to understand. More explanation is really needed for these things. I'd see the UI needs overhauled in some situations, and the tutorial guys (Sulu etc) need to explain things a bit better.

Despite this though i'm really impressed. And enjoying it!

    Oh and:

Played a few hours last night. Great fun, but I want to do more pew-pew with WangFleet comrades instead of randoms....

Anyway, two questions for the old hands:

    1) What is the "con" system in the game. I notice on ship targeting icons there are little white zeros or green ones on the side of the target. Are these levels?

    2) The random instancing has me confused....say I want to meet WangFleeter Joe who just entered the Pico system on patrol. I fly over on the starmap interface to zone into Pico, and find one or two random other players. Do I have to team up with Joe in order to enter his instance of the system? Are the people I see flying around the starmap into systems ALL the current players that then get instanced when entering the various systems and encounters, or is this higher level starmap interface itself instanced? And if so, are the people I see on the starmap people I can for example follow into a system and group with, or do we get shunted into sub-instances of the sector instance?

    Ouch, my brain....

the instancing seems to be for quest-only systems. Vulcan, for instance (wasnt it destroyed?) has channels and tons of mans, but the USS Azure system (??) you can only be in the same one at the same time using fleets.

at least the channel system is intelligent about fleets, I've yet to go somewhere and then have to change channels because my party was in a different one(see Aion)

This is the TOS/TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT universe. Romulus is destroyed, nero fucked up some ships and disappeared along with Spock, and we have transwarp capabilities thanks to Voyager and the Borg.

Sector Patrols have autoteam on. You can go into the social menu (O button?) and change team option so that it doesn't autoteam when entering a patrol system. You can enter the instance your team is on. If you completed a patrol and want to join a teammate, they have to enter the system, get the system mission, exit the system, then share that system mission with you so you can enter with them. Patrol missions are not sharable.

    EVGA GeForce GTX 275
Anthlon 64 X2 ... Can't remember the speed, I think it's 2.7 GHz? I'll have to double check that. I know it was ~$100 or so when I got it in August 2009.
    4 GB of RAM

In every other game I've played I can max the settings to it's highest with no problems: Batman: AA, Left 4 Dead 2, Dragon Age, Warhammer Online, Bioshock, Company of Heroes, all of that. Crysis runs pretty decently at Max as well (but not without some stuttering). However, the ground game in this game at max bogs my system hard, like 10-15 fps.

The space stuff is fine though.

Yea, I think the performance issues are a speciality of cryptic games. CO runs horrible for me, as does STO on ground missions. It isn't unplayable but it can get annoying.

    I'm on a middle-class laptop though, so I shouldn't expect too much.

My penis is like a toddler. A toddler—who is a perfectly normal size for his age—on a long road trip to what he thinks is Disney World. My penis is excited because he hasn’t been to Disney World in a long, long time, but remembers a time when he used to go every day. So now the penis toddler is constantly fidgeting, whining “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? How about now? Now? How about... now?”
And Disney World is nowhere in sight.

so I'm at work again for another 7 hours so you guys should get with playing less and posting here more. yeah I think that is a plan that will happen.

Today's Lesson: Sectors Systems and Patrols, oh my!

Press M and look at the map. Click the Galaxy Map. You will notice that the map is made of squares that are grouped by a think line. Each square is a sector. A group of sectors make a block. Inside each sector are systems and enemy contacts. Systems are the instances in which you do your missions.

Now a lot of you are getting missions to patrol the Vulcan Sector. The mission list states
    • Patrol the Vulcan Sector
    • Patrol the Bhea System
    • Patrol the ... System
    • etc
    • Report to Sulu

Note that it says to patrol the Vulcan SECTOR, not the Vulcan SYSTEM. A lot of people see the mission list and go to the Vulcan System. They then wonder why the objective does not complete and why there is no mission in the Vulcan System. What you are supposed to do is go to the systems listed, and generally skip the first line of the patrol mission, which is noting the Sector you are patrolling.

To Secure a System Block you check the map for red arrows, or check the game for enemy ship NPCs flying around the Sector. These spawn you into a mini "fleet action" like event, where you defeat 8 patrols. This instance is limited to 5 on low population times, and can be set up to 20 when the instances start overloading. After 8 patrols are defeated, the event is complete and a 6 minute timer is reset until the next round starts. You need to complete this 3 times to complete teh secure block mission. You can press m to bring up your map, then click the change instance button. You can then go to a different instance and look around for one that is currently doing the mission or the between round timer is almost up. Upon completing the mission and turning in, you can immediately pick it up again. 6 minute timer, about 4 minutes to complete, 10 minute per objective, 3 to complete the mission means 30 minutes per mission. This is a current favorite way to grind xp amongst people too lazy to experience the awesome episodes this game offers.

Explore the [...] Cluster missions ask you to explore (do a mission) 3 locations within the cluster. Checking the Galaxy map, clusters are noted by an arrow pointing off the edge of a system leading to nowhere. The name of the Cluster is lister there instead of a nice grid-square. Inside the cluster are Unknown Items, and when you approach them they reveal what they are. They can be an anomaly (crafting items, loot and done). Or an unknown system. You need to complete the mission within 3 unknown systems To complete the Explore mission. Upon entering an unknown system, a random map/mission is loaded. This can be either find 5 anomalies (free crafting items loot loot loot), gather a total of 5 data, gather a total of 5 data that sometimes have enmies guarding it, defend a ship against 4 attacks, fight a random enemy and then 5 other patrols, or fight 5 enemy patrols. You can leave a system and reenter the exact same unknown system, and it will still load a completely random map/mission, which can or cannot be the system/mission you just left. You can easily exit/enter systems until you find an easy no-fight mission to complete your 3 explore requirements. Explore cluster missions can be repeated 30 minutes after complting the mission. This was popular due to a glitch that completed three missions at the same time, but unknown if that glitch is in open beta.

Oh and about Cluster Missions. The no fight missions give no xp. The maybe fight and definite fights give xp. So if you take the time and do 3 fight missions you will get more xp than one secure block/enemy contact mission. I mena each fight mission is about the same xp as one complete enemy contact mission. Fight missions can be touch because (I think) they are always set to your level. At level 25+ I went to the level 1-5 cluster and still had to fight even level enemies (and got my butt whooped).

    Thank you Pika.

I figured that out on my own last night, but I'm sure people will appreciate knowing it beforehand.

Once I realized that the overmap was it all clicked and I realized what exactly I was doing.

    Question:

On the hub maps, the blue corridors -- do they denote routes that increase your speed? If so how Do I access them because I tried flying in them and I didn't notice a difference.

    Statement:

I have heard multiple people say there is something about Cryptic games and Nvidia Drivers that the two don't like each other very much.

    I'm running:

    Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.66
    4GB Ram
    GeForce 9800 GTX 512MB

The Cryptic games are the only ones I have problems with so far as performance goes. I can blow Crysis, Borderlands, etc. out of the water but Champions and STO so far give me stutters.

On a somewhat related note -- With the way the gaming industry is going now adays it's not so much of a arms race with PC components. You can normally figure if your PC is more powerful than a ps3 or Xbox 360 you're golden on any new games coming down the pipe. Hell, even a 8800 is still a very capable card.

Grr. This game has me shopping for a new video card. My radeon x850 is getting old.

Probably gonna try to find a geforce GTS250.

I've got a very decent, capable rig and the ground combat in this game really bogs my machine down. I've got...

    EVGA GeForce GTX 275
Anthlon 64 X2 ... Can't remember the speed, I think it's 2.7 GHz? I'll have to double check that. I know it was ~$100 or so when I got it in August 2009.
    4 GB of RAM
    Win 7 - 64 bit

In every other game I've played I can max the settings to it's highest with no problems: Batman: AA, Left 4 Dead 2, Dragon Age, Warhammer Online, Bioshock, Company of Heroes, all of that. Crysis runs pretty decently at Max as well (but not without some stuttering). However, the ground game in this game at max bogs my system hard, like 10-15 fps.

The space stuff is fine though.

Yeah, the ground missions were killing my PC, while the space stuff was fine..

Hm. I'll hold off until the game hits retail before spending any money on my PC. Hopefully the perfomance issues will be somewhat resolved.

After 6 hours of play I finally figured out a way to generate Energy Credits. Sell junk to your replicator! Too bad I figured this out like, 5 minutes before I had to get to bed last night. As soon as I get home its time for some mad character customization!

Also, with the Wrath of "Kahn" (after entering the code, they spell it that way. really.) uniform- do I have to reach Admiral to use the uniform? I want to cruise around in my retro Miranda with all my officers sporting those red snap vests with black bellbottoms! Now!

I really liked scaling content. I went into a patrol mission with 4 or 5 other ships, and was challenged to a similar degree in relation to later, when I did the same mission with just one other ship. This means I am not limited in what I can do in game based on how many of my friends are online. So good.

I'd suggest ATI unless you don't want to turn on things like Anti Aliasing.
    1) What is the "con" system in the game. I notice on ship targeting icons there are little white zeros or green ones on the side of the target. Are these levels?
Yes. They go positive or negative depending on your level difference. 0s are even cons. The "minion", "lieutenant", "boss", "big boss" conning is based on pips.

I am indeed using the latest nvidia drivers. I'll have to check out what other people are using to see if it boosts my performance.

Though I really hate rolling back drivers unless I need to.
Turn off anti-aliasing. Just like with Champions. Oblivion engine games have the same issue.
