A problem with a 360 joypad

My girlfriend just bought herself a used 360 pro, and the joypad won't connect, so she tried reconnecting via the small white wireless buttons on the console and the pad, but all this has done is made the joypad think it's the fourth pad on the console, and the console doesn't seem to recognise it at all, as the ring is completely dark. Anyone want to take a guess at this?

    Unplug the console, unhook the batteries, wait a minute or two, pop 'em both on and try again?

    Sounds like it's syncing to another console. I've read about people's 360s turning on randomly by themselves, only to find that the neighbor's controllers had somehow synced to it.

    See if any of the neighbors are wondering who the mystery 4th player is!
