Aw. I got all excited when I heard "Open Beta", because although I'm not a huge Star Trek fan - I thought this could be really cool. Now I find out that you have to buy it first... Sad panda indeed.

Well there is still a way to 'try the game'. One of the versions of it, might be the Collectors Edition gives you three 10-day cards to give to people. Could see once the game is released if someone would be willing to hand one off to 'ya.
Well, I'll be starting my Headstart tomorrow, after I do a late preorder at Gamestop
This'll be me tomorrow too, probably. Depends on how much it snows here, not to mention whether I can be assed to need to go out tomorrow as well as Tuesday to pick it up.
Yes, I have it....It's ok.....I guess.... Looking at everything, I liked the idea of having an extra "hold" option.
The speed debuff seems to be broken since people I "cast" it on can still run/sprint away from me just fine. The "hold" part doesn't leave you enough time to do anything but stop and fire RIGHT THEN. Between seeing it take effect, having your brain process "Oh shit their held", pressing the fire button, and THEN the lag, they are already moving again. Also, many times I've tried to position my self for a flank shot and they came out just as I was firing.
Still, I personally think its better than .1 of anything .
Just wanted to say thanks to Lucascraft for making the new thread, that out of the way i'm wondering if anyone else has had a problem with sound not working.... I have all my setting ingame set at the defaults, and sound works fine with other games/programs on my computer, really just hoping someone has a quick fix for this other then me having to uninstall and redownload the client again.
Stupid Steam, it erased the STO - Beta install and begain the STO - Retail install as soon as I exited the game. >:(
Ahh well, I guess I just have to be satisfied with reaching rank 8 today.
What is the best way to earn XP if you form a static group? Or is it better XP to just keep flying around doing missions?
I was thinking a full set group doing the encounters x3 quest repeatedly would be able to crank out some pretty good xp pretty quick.

If you can get a group that isn't bored to tears by that, sure.
Eeeh, Steam still has STO - Beta on my end. How do I slap it around so it removes the Beta and doesn't mess up?
The best I can suggest is to go into the Game properties, and under updates, turn off the automatic updates.
I'm just hoping that the new updated version actually provides Steam users with their retail code, so we can start in with some of our pre-order bonuses as a consolation for downloading an extra 11 GB of data during the headstart.
I had sound issues earlier. found out it has to do with steam running as administrator (which I was doing to fix Mass Effect (the original)). running as user instead solved that problem. hope that works since its a pretty easy fix.

So what do you guys like as far as traits go? I think Warp Theorist is probably almost required (some NICE benefits to taking the trait and training the skill up to max), but...
Anyone tried out Borg Neural Blast?
I have been having fun with some of the ground stuff. Telekinesis, Bite and Rupture in particular are fun.
Everyone starts in the Miranda which is a Light Cruiser.
Almost true everyone starts in a light cruiser. So either a Miranda, a Centaur or a Shirkar. Unless you have the gamestop retail key. Then you start with a TOS Connie
Our issue with the Beytan system earlier was only when we were on a team. As soon as my team split it up it let us get that damnable mission done and out of the way.
Got a late start tonight but made it to Lt5. Very much looking forward to getting my cruiser back tomorrow.

Could someone tell me what size their STO folder is? After todays colossal steam fuck up (despite me running it from the cryptic exe and not steam) mine is now up to 22.3 gigs..at 52% done downloading..which seems a bit...off.

Once I turned off open teaming, it seemed to work fine. There must be something screwed up since it's only a two person mission. Maybe they're trying to cram 5 people in and it's breaking.

Entertaining, enemy has to get within a pretty good range to be able to use it, at low levels it seems kinda useless since the enemies are easy to kill, but when encountering large groups of enemies its handy to slow down at least one and give you a better shot..
Also, pressing C in ground combat to aim better, very wise decision I've found... Can take down enemies much quicker now...
Though between server maintenance, work, my parents visiting, and my wife complaining about "not spending enough time with her", I'm not getting as much use out of this headstart as I'd like...
Only 63% downloaded. Steam is only pulling around 25k/s. Thanks to my brother hogging all of our bandwidth I'm probably going to miss pretty much the whole headstart.

There is. It's somewhere in the old thread I think, near the end.
