I could see it being amazing if done right. I don't necessarily see it being done at all, much less right, given nintendo's current practices.
It could be amazing, but it would be full of jerks and unecesssary competition.
People "sniping" in to steal a pokemon as someone else tries to catch it, etc.

I don't hate MMOs, but I think it would make a fantastic breeding ground for all of the silly gooses in the pokecommunity.
Just spend 20 minutes on the Serebii forums, and ask yourself if you really want to be playing with these people.
EDIT: Although I suppose any MMO will have it's fair share of people like that.

It'd only be neat because you'd basically have a trainer guy but then you'd have 6 different characters being controlled while you're a trainer, so you could basically swap roles on the fly, whenever you send a pokemon out you control that pokemon and it's little skill bar until you either faint or decide to swap for a different one

Lots of people are annoying. I don't see this as a real reason not to have online games.
It's always possible that an mmo wouldn't appeal to the same crowd because of complexity, lack of cheating, etc... But this is also why it might never happen. Pokemon isn't really targeted to the right crowd for an mmo.

Waterfall had more PP than Lance had full restores.
