PAX Bingo!

Bingo! Pastime and social opportunity of the elderly and unemployed, it's also a pretty big hit on roadtrips and conventions. Which conventions? This one!

Well, that is if anyone else is interested.

See, it works pretty simply:

1) We all come up with a list of activities to perform, sights to see, celebrities to accost, etc.
2) I collate these and use them to create a ho-jillion Bingo cards.
3) I distribute these Bingo cards to everyone who wants to participate.
4) You print out and bring your card to PAX and try desperately to get it filled out.
5) We convene either at PAX or in this thread after PAX (or both) and compare cards.

FAQs

Q: Wait, how do you tell who the winner is?
A: Dude, everyone wins. The point isn't to fill up the card so that you win a prize, the point is to fill up your card because IT IS FULL OF AWESOME THINGS TO DO.

Q: How much is this gonna cost?
A: Enh, I'll eat the costs. Basically I buy a copy of Bingo Card Creator and email everyone their created cards.

Q: Wait, I have to print the card myself? On plain paper?
A: There's not much point in printing up Really Nice Cards, since you'll need to bring 'em everywhere with you and they will likely get folded and such. You want a really neat memento of PAX? Go order and trade some buttons, or get in on a challenge coin. PAX Bingo is about experiences, yo.

Categories

A Bingo card has five columns: B, I, N, G, and O. I'm proposing that we make each column a category, and all items have to fit in one of those 5 categories. So I'm taking suggestions for categories as well.

(Disclaimer; I dunno if the software actually does this, but they've got a free trial and I'll check it out shortly.)

Experiences List

Here, lemme toss some out as examples:
  • See Gabe
  • See Tycho
  • Watch Keynote
  • Play a Beta
  • Win at Smash Brothers
  • Draw a Wang on Pictochat
If you want a card, PM me your email address (or at least an email address you'll check). If you want to suggest Categories or Experiences, do it right here in this thread.

It's a little late to be starting this, I know, but whatever, email is a quick delivery service. I figure we have to have this whole deal wrapped up by August 27, so that my lazy ass has a chance to collate everything, make the cards, and go through the email list.

That's not a joke at all, and you know it! I've already started pumping vitamin C to beef up the ol' immune system.

    Suggestions:

Feed an appropriate movie/game quote to a cosplayer
Concoct a mixed drink with Bawls (all-ages: just drink one)
    Trade swag with a stranger
Play a game in someone else's hotel room
Take a picture with a witch/wizard on the pub crawl
Act like a zombie at the JoCo concert
Swim in the pool at the Sheraton
Get kicked out of the console freeplay room at 2am ( :( )
Yell "FINISH HIM" at any point during the con

This is the ultimate con scavenger hunt idea and I love it.

    I submit for your consideration:
Play anything on a "classic" console
    Attend a panel
Meet a PAX attendee outside the convention zone (airport, train depot or greater city zone)

    For categories:
    (B)
(I)nteractive (you need another person to complete)
    (N)
    (G)aming
    (O)ther

(need some help with B and N)

Sadly, it turns out that the software I was looking for won't do categories like that, so that nixes that idea.

But I like the ideas for the categories so far - there's no reason we can't use them to spark ideas!

I like this. I'd just like to suggest/ask we hold off on the "win at a game" squares. Cause, you know, some people suck at multiplayer games (that's me!). I'm totally down with try a new game/demo, play a multiplayer in line, play a game with a stranger, etc. I think it should be more about universally achievable things that are sort of your choice to do or not do as opposed to something you may try over and over again to do and ultimately failing to get your stamp.

The "N" category could be Name Drop (for the Gabe/Tycho/JoCo/Specific Cosplayer squares); still can't think of anything for the "B" category.

As for ideas for the activities:
Get a photo with a TF2 or other VG-character cosplay group (Namedrop)
    Witness the PAX Prank (Namedrop)
Meet [your biggest Video Game Nerd Hero in attendance] (Namedrop)
Be a victim of the PAX Prank (Interactive)
    Receive a button (Interactive)
    Play a Game (Free Space)
Participate in a Full Pictochat Room (Interactive)
    Make a new friend (Interactive)
Fall asleep in the Convention Center (naps in lines, beanbag chair, etc) (Other)
    Play a non-electronic game (Gaming)
Teach someone how to play a game (Interactive/Gaming)

Maybe (B) could be "Bragging rights" and include those hard to come by wins, chance meetings with celebrities and autographs. I realize that negates the proposed N category, but I feel like N might have more options of a different variety. In any case, its good category for inspiration.

If the program won't do the categories, you could put something together with Excel and do random "Data" sorting in various columns to keep shuffling the boards? I know, more work than it's worth, right?

I like the "Bragging Rights" idea; actually, to make it more personal, it could just be an entire column of blanks that you need to fill in completely yourself with your own unique "bragging rights" experiences.

    Shiiiiiiiiiiiit.

    =(

Sorry guys, my last-minute PAX plans were pretty hectic and I totally forgot about this thread and this idea.

Thankfully, more enterprising folk than me did similar games (the PAX XP thing, the scavenger hunt, etc.) so if you were interested in something like this, hopefully you got the chance to do it!
