A long time ago I made the conscious decision that I would never attempt to shield myself from the truth for that reason.
But I don't disagree with the following assertion, but I will say that I don't think it will stay that way forever. Once we understand a lot more about the way the brain works, the way that genetics interact with behavior, etc, these are questions that will have to come up.
especially when we get to the point where we can and are willing to select for certain genes.
it would be unethical not to remove a kid's tsachs
and maybe unethical to allow a marker for mental retardation or stomach cancer carry into an infant.
I guess my point is that, as someone who is intensely concerned with evolution, and whose driving question is "how did this trait arise?", I can't seem to come up with any sort of logical reason that, say, a woman, or an asian would do better or worse at something like math without invoking some sort of outside influence that precludes a genetic explanation.
in fairness, sickle cell anemia was noted to be common in people of north-african descent long before the causal vector was established.
it strikes me that you're holding a much higher bar for considerations of genetic differences than you are socio-economic or cultural causes, which you generally heartily endorse with naught but a handwave.
Yes I am! Because it is phenomenally difficult to accurately pin these behaviors to genetics alone. And if you DO pin it to genetics, then you have to explain WHY IT IS GENETICALLY BASED!
With sickle cell this is easy! Sickle cell confers a selective advantage in the african population!
But how do you explain it if you found that african americans have genetically-linked poor academic performance?
[devil's advocate]
The obvious answer is that poor academic performance would be a by-product of a complexly related aspect that was selected for.
[/devil's advocate]
But then, like sickle-cell, it isn't a race thing so much as it is a coincidence.
and I seriously doubt this is the case
Sickle-cell isn't a coincidence, though, like you said it was selected for!
The dumb thing that people do is try to assume that our own cultural values for "superiority" or "inferiority" have anything to do with selective fitness, or that metrics by which we rate people today correspond to actual physical and mental capabilities.
Hell, it's not even out of the question that there would be a selective pressure for people to be stupider, and it is certainly not out of the question that people could be selected for mental aspects that just happen to make you do worse on standardized tests.
Man I have no idea when any of you fuckers are being sarcastic anymore.
Sarcasm is the new... not sarcasm.

I can never tell when you're trolling anymore, Will. I think it must be a function of [chat]; like how Thanatos rose to meet the perception that he hates everything, you've become some sort of arch-oldguy. Forever yelling at those damn kids to get off your lawn, not really sure if you're championing gender essentialism out of genuine belief or just to stick it to these long-haired hippie fags.

Sorry- I think you missed the point I made earlier.
Sickle cell being more prominent along traditional race lines is more of a coincidence of geography than of anything inherent to the genetic makeup of african americans

I know Cass wanted to play when she got back from lunch but I'm not 100% sure when that will be. But yes, I'd like to play LoL.
Obv genetics.
Ok calling franky your little girl is disturbing, and justin is hardly a little anything.

I mostly make other people feel awkward.
Oh shits, fucking everyone I know plays LoL now. God I will never get a job at this rate.
There are plenty of white kids from tropical areas with sickle-cell.
the "no true scotch man" fallacy.
that's sexism
obviously you pushed her into playing with dollies
because you're sexist

Sarcasm is the new... not sarcasm.
Gim actually said he dislikes the new york jets earlier. He said he'll personally feed Ryan the fatal meatball nachos.

Well trodden ground who's only experiment (mind you it wasn't very scientific) completely failed?
I would say a lot of aspects are still controversial. The thing that shouldn't be controversial is the fact that the answer can not be simple.
"Genetics" or "Socialization" will not suffice.

My dick is like 8 terabytes
unless her vagina has Fios i'm gonna take a looooong time.
for purposes of that post, yes
Those awkward silences are interesting. Because they're not awkward to me.
But we've already established that robots have no emotions, so obviously they're not awkward.
oh baby seed my torrents!
atleast in this conversation
I go for the latter. "Legos" just sounds weird to me - was it a marketing term in the US back in the day?
I've heard you've got a thumbnail...
