I think they did a really good job with Casino Royale but the other one wasn't as good

I would like a gay scene in the next Bond movie

Sean Connery is the best James Bond because he drunk from the Holy Grail and can never die.

Yeah, the latest one was kind of a disappointing mess. There wasn't much of a plot and it was gimmicky as hell. A house fueled by deadly explosive hydrogen? That's the same crap that weighed down the Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan movies.

I would also endorse a gay Bond. He should be a voracious 21st century sex god.

There was a bit on NPR last week that was saying that if the next Bond doesn't do pretty well MGM is dead dead.

Dr. No. is my favorite. Maybe just because it was the first one I saw.

I haven't seen the Daniel Craig Bond movies, but I've seen all the others.

    James Bond is alright.

I kind of resent famous fictional characters with whom I share the same first name.

I recently listened to the Moonraker audiobook.

I think I like book Bond better than movie Bond.

Though, of the movie Bonds I've seen, Sean Connery was the closest to the guy in the book. Not quite right though. Mebby Daniel Craig gets it right. I'll get around to watching the new ones someday.

The Casino Royale song is the best one in years and years. Who knew I would ever like something with the dude from Soundgarden and the dudes from Rage Against the Machine? That's like the anti-Jacob formula but it somehow worked.

The new Bond movies are great but it seems like they're a lot harder to make. Silly action scenes, one dimensional super evil villains, overly slick spy dialogue... it practically writes its self and it's fun. It's a formula that works well.

But if you make Bond a deeply flawed man fighting a more realistic, nebulous enemy and dial back the over-the-top stuff, you can't fall back on the cheap and easy Bond movie formula. They tried in the last one and audiences hated it. You have to make something that's actually good.

I thought you would settle for a Bond homage :(

Goldeneye and Casino Royale are basically the only two bond movies I care about. I just never got that much into the franchise.

That's an excellent point, and very true. The temptation to fall back on old habits must be overwhelming since they know audiences will basically show up for whatever.

The other one can safely be skipped, though

    This guy, right here:

    21995.jpg

Is James Bond in spaaaace. Only with better writing and Poul Anderson first published stories about him in 1951, two years before Ian Flemming started on with James Bond.

edit: Also, the finale to the series of stories about Dominic Flandry's foil and primary nemesis (well worthy of being his Moriarty) is called "A Knight of Ghosts and Shadows". The only thing making that book less than the single best piece of epic science fiction ever is that to get the most out of it you really need to have read the previous stand-alone books with the characters (much like Night Watch in the Discworld series).

I love James Bond. One of the most iconic male protagonists in film history. One of the greatest things about the franchise is how each Bond flick feels like a Bond flick, you watch them because you want to watch something specific, something that's carved out its own place in the action genre. They are a category unto themselves.

And despite the fact that, at the end of the day these films are just about violence, fast cars, loose women, and the suave, cocky, calculating British killing machine that is James Bond, every once in a while a Bond flick will slide something in there that's actually touching. Like the ending of On Her Majesty's Secret Service, or the betrayal James felt at the hands of his friend Trevelyan in Goldeneye. The fate of Felix and his wife at the beginning of License to Kill.

Bond rarely cares about who he's after, he just gets the job done, and that lack of connection in most other action films would be detrimental -- a paycheque is not sufficient reason to kill hundreds of men, even if it is to save a nation or the world, you need a more personal reason for a man to go to the lengths that Bond does.

But that's just it: Bond's more than a man. He's James Fucking Bond.
