The game play of WoW is leveling and gaining abilities and such. Thus you spend the 15 a month to get that. If you don't want that then don't get WoW.
Though I agree with games like LoL or TF2 it is stupid because it lessens the main idea of the game. I don't play TF2 anymore because I don't like the item idea or bosses and such. But in WoW it is the design of the game.
In WoW what I found most enjoyable was the actual dungeon crawl; being a tank and keeping my team alive, marking targets for crowd control, etc. Frankly, I think that's the draw for a lot of people, which is why people try to level quickly and then get to the endgame, because they don't want to level, they're not paying to level, they're paying to kill monsters in dungeons. That doesn't describe the entire WoW playerbase, obviously, but I don't think any one particular player archetype does.
You are paying to grind be it for exp, money or items. The dungeon is just a way to get to those. But I guess each there own but really mmos are all about grinding for something, abilities are the start and a big part of the "rpg" part of mmorpg. Part of the time sink.
I think what's being said is for good competitive game design every option should be available from the get-go, no additional time/money needed.
I can agree that for PVP, that's pretty much the best way you could do it. I think I prefer the power to scale up as you go for single-player or cooperative games, though.
Yeah. Really my criticism is more for PvP games. Leveling in WoW isn't that big of a deal to me (especially now that it's accelerated).

every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.
I went to Macy's tonight looking for a black sport coat/blazer/whatever you'd call it tonight since Nickie's Christmas party is tomorrow and I'm lacking in the dressy clothing category. I figured I'd get hit for around $100 for something no-name or on sale. Found one on a rack after wandering for a while, it fit nicely, didn't make me look like I'd shopped at Goodwill. The tag on the arm said $150. The sign on the rack said $24.99. It actually rang up for $75, but because the sign on the rack was wrong the clerk goes "Well that's our mistake, I'll price adjust it for you" and gave it to me for $24.99.
I think there is definetly something worthwhile in a PvP game with regards to some kind of progression (though time based unlocks like TF2 are the absolute worst way possible to do it).
Shattered Galaxy had a few periods during its Alpha / Beta period when it got that right. Though they kept spasticially changing the game so by release it was back to being fairly crap.

Well, yeah. WoW is a colorful Skinner Box. I mean, I loved WoW.
But a spade is a spade, etc.
Ever considered video taping someone playing WoW alone? Just to get an idea of the actual interaction involved?
I know there's mental interaction, but Raid Healing? Goddamn...
