Also I really like the clean linework and cool colors, though the missing lower half and cropped off wings feels like its keeping the piece from reaching its full potential.

Yeah I started it as a doodle on good 'ole 8x11 computer printer paper. Half way through I saw it was coming out good and started kicking myself because I was running out of space.
I'll write myself a reminder to start a "sketch book" thread.
You can use this thread. Threads are for getting pointed critique, But people use them for a while. Its frowned upon to have multiple threads open for one person, so people who post often have what is essentially a sketchbook.
We also have a doodle thread, which gets plenty of finished work posted in it, It just doesn't have the commitment of a thread.
I like the birdman, I would try and finish off the bottom with some sort of touch.
And you can just change the title of your thread to suit whatever it is you're posting at the moment. Just click to edit your original post and then advanced.
Meant to follow up with some recent sketch work but my HD crapped out
Oh well thats what backup HD images are for! While I wait to get everything up and running....I give you pouty lipped, overly concerned guy. If I had to give it a caption it would be:
Cool stuff, I really liked your submission for the contest.
For your crosshatchy stuff, you may want to try to make the hatches define the form more, instead of just being angled at a set angle if you catch my drift. It'll make stuff look less flat and more like 3D shapes.

I totally agree. Stepping back and looking at these now I see that. Time and time again I'm just dropping flat lines on curved surfaces. Thank you for pointing that out.

The one below comes off a little flat.
