For years, federal laws restricting the use of government funds to pay for abortions have included exemptions for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest. (Another exemption covers pregnancies that could endanger the life of the woman.) But the "No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act," a bill with 173 mostly Republican co-sponsors that House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) has dubbed a top priority in the new Congress, contains a provision that would rewrite the rules to limit drastically the definition of rape and incest in these cases.

With this legislation, which was introduced last week by Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.), Republicans propose that the rape exemption be limited to "forcible rape." This would rule out federal assistance for abortions in many rape cases, including instances of statutory rape, many of which are non-forcible. For example: If a 13-year-old girl is impregnated by a 24-year-old adult, she would no longer qualify to have Medicaid pay for an abortion. (Smith's spokesman did not respond to a call and an email requesting comment.)

The bill hasn't been carefully constructed, Levenson notes. The term "forcible rape" is not defined in the federal criminal code, and the bill's authors don't offer their own definition. In some states, there is no legal definition of "forcible rape," making it unclear whether any abortions would be covered by the rape exemption in those jurisdictions.

    Well, this is appalling.

it's a house resolution. has very little chance of passing the senate, let alone the president.

To be fair, from what I've seen it's mostly been debating the merits of "extremist" takes on feminism but with huge failings at actually stipulating that.

Yeah, I know. I was just commenting on it as a gesture in itself. It pisses me off when people describe rape without violent "force" as a lesser crime (or not a crime at all), as if sex without consent isn't inherently an act of violence.

Nope, it really is virtually unheard of. Of the people who get it in their 30s to 40s they are pretty much definitely going to be overweight, at the very least. Probably also smokers, and hypertensive.

People with congenital defects I believe would be more likely to present in childhood/teens/early twenties.

I don't see why; we debate the merits of conservatism constantly, in spite of being liberals. We debate the merits of religion frequently, in spite of being Atheists. And we debate the merits of gay marriage, in spite of being straight.

Anyone here ever take a class in meditation? My school's gym is offering all sorts of weekly classes for $38-$50.

I could also take a dance class, but I'm pretty sure that'd be even more embarrassing than chanting and concentrating on zen koans.

I could take something called extreme bootcamp too, but I'm worried that that would be too competitive for my tastes.

I just get irritated when I get called middle-class.

I'm fairly well-read, and I've learned to do an RP accent from years of mixing with posh people (and finding work a lot easier when you don't sound rough). But my background is rough as guts.

So people assume I'm middle-class or even posh, and then try to bond with me by complaining about 'chavs' and 'proles'.

    Oh and 'plebs'.
