For years, federal laws restricting the use of government funds to pay for abortions have included exemptions for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest. (Another exemption covers pregnancies that could endanger the life of the woman.) But the "No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act," a bill with 173 mostly Republican co-sponsors that House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) has dubbed a top priority in the new Congress, contains a provision that would rewrite the rules to limit drastically the definition of rape and incest in these cases.
With this legislation, which was introduced last week by Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.), Republicans propose that the rape exemption be limited to "forcible rape." This would rule out federal assistance for abortions in many rape cases, including instances of statutory rape, many of which are non-forcible. For example: If a 13-year-old girl is impregnated by a 24-year-old adult, she would no longer qualify to have Medicaid pay for an abortion. (Smith's spokesman did not respond to a call and an email requesting comment.)
The bill hasn't been carefully constructed, Levenson notes. The term "forcible rape" is not defined in the federal criminal code, and the bill's authors don't offer their own definition. In some states, there is no legal definition of "forcible rape," making it unclear whether any abortions would be covered by the rape exemption in those jurisdictions.
Well, this is appalling.
it's a house resolution. has very little chance of passing the senate, let alone the president.
Oh dear Fringe, your stretching my disbelief a bit far.
I'm seriously doubting a 30/40 something year old non-obese, fit man would have heart failure to the point where he'd get a heart transplant.
people have congenital defects sometimes
aren't you studying to be a doctor?
I know, but they wouldn't look like this guy in that case.
Though I guess there's the occasional surprise. Like I saw this 26 year old who came into A&E with his second stroke and first MI. Shit be horrible when you're that young, actually made me a bit teary-eyed.
FUCK I SHOULD HAVE WRITTEN ABOUT THAT IN MY REFLECTIVE ESSAY.
Christ, that would have been so much better. Sigh.

At risk of reopening the debate, I think it's kinda funny to have a group of white middle-class men sitting around debating the merits of feminism.
well
i think it's kinda funny to have a bunch of people who've never heard a gun shot or seen a body bag passionately argue for the status of the occupied territories
but that sounds absurdly condescending so i don't say it

To be fair, from what I've seen it's mostly been debating the merits of "extremist" takes on feminism but with huge failings at actually stipulating that.

Yeah, I know. I was just commenting on it as a gesture in itself. It pisses me off when people describe rape without violent "force" as a lesser crime (or not a crime at all), as if sex without consent isn't inherently an act of violence.

Yeah that doesn't seem impossible to me
Nope, it really is virtually unheard of. Of the people who get it in their 30s to 40s they are pretty much definitely going to be overweight, at the very least. Probably also smokers, and hypertensive.
People with congenital defects I believe would be more likely to present in childhood/teens/early twenties.

I'm fairly sure that was specified way back at the outset of the conversation, but since people dip in and out of the chat thread it probably got lost along the way.

I don't see why; we debate the merits of conservatism constantly, in spite of being liberals. We debate the merits of religion frequently, in spite of being Atheists. And we debate the merits of gay marriage, in spite of being straight.

discuss how I should have said something EYEronic like "does this mean I won't be accepted to pirate school now?" (hint: that's what I actually said to him. He chuckled but i suspect it was merely him being polite.)
Looks like my demoman cosplay this year will be just a little bit less authentic. I already had my whiteness going against me. sniffle
but yeah my eye is still incredibly gross looking and its constantly hurting and feeling like someone is just placing their finger on it always and its also oozing yellow fluid. Pictures soon!
I just get irritated when I get called middle-class.
I'm fairly well-read, and I've learned to do an RP accent from years of mixing with posh people (and finding work a lot easier when you don't sound rough). But my background is rough as guts.
So people assume I'm middle-class or even posh, and then try to bond with me by complaining about 'chavs' and 'proles'.

Not everyone here is white or middle-class. Or a man.
I'm quite surprised you'd say something like that.

Yes, god forbid these privilege-blinded oppressors have an opinion on it.
Rivs, I took a nap after racist[chat] and during feminism[chat], so my mind could heal.
Don't do this.

I could also take a dance class, but I'm pretty sure that'd be even more embarrassing than chanting and concentrating on zen koans.
I could take something called extreme bootcamp too, but I'm worried that that would be too competitive for my tastes.
