Can someone tell me why it's a bad thing to restrict the sale of violent games to children?
Because it is already restricted by internal regulation, there is no reason for the government to step in. Also because for the government to make it a legal issue conflicts with the Constitution's instruction that the government not restrict people's freedom of expression. It's very rare for the US government to censor things that can be considered artistic expression, even if they have objectionable material.

It'd be pretty silly to say that violent video games have no effect on the person playing them.
It's also hypocritical. People want to say that video games are art, which they obviously are. (One of) The point(s) of art is to impact the audience. If a video game can affect the player through its gameplay and storytelling, then it stands to reason that some of the ways in which it can possibly affect the player are negative or undesirable.
The issue is that scared old people want to act like video games have the capacity for a uniquely powerful negative influence on children compared to every other form of media, and that they therefore deserve more regulation than other forms of art. This is hypocritical in the exact other direction, because they want to pretend that video games lack any artistic merit even though they evidently have the power to transform innocent children into serial killers.
If you spend all day mowing down innocent people in GTA or performing fatalities and X-ray moves in MK9, you're going to be at least somewhat desensitized to violence. That's just common sense. You're not suddenly at risk of shooting up your school though, unless you were already a deeply disturbed individual.

Studies are saying that the effects are negligible, Speed. Maybe at one point, when we can properly duplicate reality, it will change but for now- games ain't got nothing on the real thing.
Hell, we're at an incredible low for juvenile violence. In the past ten years there has been an unprecedented drop for youth committed violence in the US (one of the theories for this being that kids are inside a bunch more playing video games, and not out in the street getting into trouble).

Also I think it is pretty silly to say it really desensitizes you to violence.
Sure, fake violence does not bother me at all. I'm not really disturbed by fake violence.
But violence I know is real still disturbs the hell out of me.

Despite its high-caliber journalism, The Onion has once again been snubbed by the body that awards the Pulitzer Prizes. Here's what's wrong with the Pulitzer Board:
A cabal of aging virgins whose only hope is a pity-lay from the sluts at The New York Times or The Philadelphia Inquirer
Too stupid to fully grasp implications of threats
Unwilling to acknowledge any publication not financially in the red
Board member Junot Díaz was rejected by The Onion three times in 1994, and this is his sick and twisted form of revenge
Extremely convoluted bribery requirements
Disrespects the work of The Onion's brave war photographers due to prejudice against minors
Only able to get their withered old rocks off anymore by seeing the word "Katrina" written in a serifed font
Bunch of babies pooping in their baby diapers
Just not very good at their jobs

I remember being confused about this whole game classification issue but that was mostly because in the UK, everything (except books for some reason) is legally age restricted, subject to fines by the BBFC if retailers don't enforce them
So this idea of forcing that kind of regulation on games alone is kind of weird

I think it stems from the fact that people seem naturally to worry more about being embarrassed than frightened.

They're cartoons with cartoonish deaths. It's just silly.
uh, actually, every study of the effect of violent video games on children has shown at least a temporary increase in anti-social behavior
no, there's no scientific evidence that they produce long-term effects on kids
but it's patently false to argue that they have no effect on children
that's why parents are supposed to take responsibility for the entertainment their children consume

As I understand it there's not much raw proof of anything regarding long-term effects and that's why we have ratings that err on the side of caution.
that would be a completely accurate description of the science on the matter

edit: Then again, I haven't liked any of the pulitzer stuff they've been doing. Thought it was annoying. so maybe my humor is just broken.
the idea that Glenn Beck would retire from his career of being a professional shithead is actually a really good reason to award The Onion a Pulitzer
they'd be doing more for journalism in one deft stroke than they've ever done in their entire storied history
