PAX Breweries Thread

edited July 2011 in PAX Archive
Someone last year or the year before for PAX Prime made a thread for all the breweries around Seattle.
I think someone made a google earth file at that time which loaded all the locations.

Well didn't see a thread started this year and I found a map I made on google maps.

This one is (PAX) Breweries In and Around Seattle:
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=204247750336961172509.000467c20025053e1a837&msa=0&ll=47.631272,-122.31534&spn=0.043439,0.077162

Here is one (PAX) Breweries Near PAX:
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=204247750336961172509.000467c2c1a15559b9854&msa=0&ll=47.625603,-122.339115&spn=0.086887,0.154324

Maps include:
Breweries located in the Seattle area (North from Everett, South to Tacoma?) and its distance from the Penny-Arcade Expo (PAX)
-Green is recommended.
-Red is more of a restaurant chain than a microbrewery.
-Yellow is questionable places, may not recommend.
-Blue is a brewery or brewpub with microbrews.

These do not include typical brewpubs, just the microbreweries and their pubs.

    What does Blue mean?

By the way, Baron Brewing (currently yellow) does some very respectable beers and has the coolest growler bottles in town. They have a pirate-themed brewpub in Greenwood called Pillager's Pub. Recommended gaming hangout: big tables and good lighting, with a great game store on the same block.

Actual Breweries and their respective brewhouses as opposed to bars/restaurants that do their own in-house beer. Rock Bottom is a good example of the latter. That's not bad necessarily, just different than going to the brewery proper.

you missed one of the most important ones, wahhh!

    Black Raven Brewing.

    14679 Northeast 95th Street
    Redmond, WA 98052

they are shaping up to be the Seattle area's Russian River. (if you know anything about beer you should recognize that name. if you don't, russian river makes some of the best craft beers in the country, and are awesome experimenters)

there's no food, it's just a taproom. it has awesome gigantic wooden tables and is all around amazing.

on the negative side, it's usually pretty crowded, especially over the weekends.

if anybody gets some sort of crazy brewery crawl together, i am so down with that.

also, Mac and Jacks African Amber is the beer of choice around here. gotta have a mac n' jacks when you're down in the area. also, the mac and jack's brewery has a free brewery tour every sunday at (i think) 4pm.

downside is that it's also on the east side. upside is it's pretty close to black raven!

I love Black Raven. I was at their 2nd anniversary block party a few months back and had nothing but Cask Reserves (they make a mighty fine Imperial Stout that I would do many terrible things to posses more frequently). I don't even remember what happened after the 5th cask or how I ended up in that Safeway parking lot but Boy did I have a lot of fun.

Here's the problem though: for most folks attending PAX, especially folks from out of town, taking a pilgrimage en mass (or hell, even just a small group) all the way out to Redmond just for beer (even if it is very good beer) is going to be very impractical. Not impossible, just not very likely.

If a brewery crawl is going to be done, staying within the Seattle metro area is probably best.

What would be a good Seattle brewery crawl?

Pike, Pyrmid, Elysian, Big time, Maritime, Hales? McMenamins, Rock Bottom, Ram, Gorden B's?

Isn't Naked City doing their own nanobrewing now? They're a little trendy for my tastes, but if you like fashionable, it's pretty hoppin'. Haha. Hoppin. Beer pun. Um... yeah.

And Baron is still 'Questionable'? I suppose I can't disagree with that, since last time we were there playing Catan, it was filled with a bunch of folks in full pirate regalia. SCA maybe? They'd surely give it questionable status.

The maps should have two locations for Baron- one I've not heard of and the other is the Pilager's pub. Pilager's shouldn't be questionable.

Naked City does do a fair amount of brewing, and is definitely a great bar in Seattle for beer selection.

Add to list (that I can think of off the top of my head):

    Fremont Brewing
    3409 Woodland Park Ave N
    Seattle, 98103
    http://www.fremontbrewing.com/

    Two Beers Brewery
    4700 Ohio Ave S
    Seattle 98134
    http://www.twobeersbrewery.com/

    Odin Brewing
    9130 15th Pl. S. Suite F
    Seattle, WA 98108
    http://odinbrewing.com/

I'm actually not sure what the status of Odin's tasting room is, if it exists yet or not.

Odin, Valhalla and Baron are within walking distance of each other but they're down in South Park (Big Al Brewing is about a five-ten minute drive up into White Center from there). Two Beers, Schooner Exact Brewing and Georgetown Brewing are down in.... Georgetown, which isn't as far south but still will require a bit of leg work.

That said however You don't have to go down to clear down to South Park if you want to try Baron biers as all of them are on tap at the Pillagers Pub in Greenwood (which is across the street from Naked City). If you're gonna go up north to that area, there is a German pub called called Prost, which has primarily German biers but with the added bonus that you can order them in Liters or Boots. There food is pretty good as well. Also in the area is UBER and Duck Island Ale House though really, those are just bars that always have excellent taps.

Anyways, my Buick can seat five. Six if someone wants to ride bitch between myself an the front passenger.
