But, wait, so Superman is invulnerable, right? But then again, isn't that an exaggeration? Superman is NOT invulnerable, but merely stated as being invulnerable for the sake of brevity/clarity. That is to say, Superman is merely very hardy. Doomsday is hardier. Invulnerable is used as a descriptor in a figurative way, not a literal way.
Invulnerability refers to the ability held by Kryptonians and other superbeings to be able to withstand incredible amounts of physical harm without taking any damage.
That is not the description of invulnerability. Invulnerability would be the ability to withstand unlimited amounts of physical harm without taking damage.
Invulnerability is figurative here, it's not the "right" word, it's just used for the sake of brevity. It's easier to say "Superman is invulnerable" than to say "Superman is able to withstand x pounds of force before taking damage, can withstands temperatures between y and z degrees, can survive [...]" and so on.
Yeah, I basically abandoned the Debt Ceiling thread a little bit before the new thread rolled over. It's starting to get a little too one-sided, so there's no point in bandwagoning, imo. Nobody who disagrees with the popular opinion is able to concisely offer a good argument, and nobody's really getting convinced of anything, that I'm seeing.

He's real strong, he's real tough, he's our dude, Superman.
I'm not gonna comment on the debt ceiling thread, but on the overall discourse of the subject the only commentary worth reading is that exploring whether the Republicans are stupid, misguided, or suicidal stubborn, and inquiries on source of their stupidity. That's about it.

Oh lord. A friend of mine who dropped out of high school changed his profile picture on Facebook to his truck. I am seeing a Confederate flag, a "Don't Tread on Me" flag, a "Nobama", and about half a dozen other stickers that I can't read, most of which seem to be about hunting and guns. I'm counting at least 4 skulls on it, too. I wonder if he ever got his truck nutz that he wanted so bad.
This guy used to be in all of the gifted and advanced classes.

I think our discussion on the debt ceiling last night was more productive than a good chunk of that thread has been for the last 20 odd pages. Maybe though that is because I have been reading so much so it was nice to see points of view not as regurgitated as that thread does.

From what I gather, most Republicans are increasing desperate for a way out and know that it'll be their heads if this shit happens.

Harder than most. First they control the House. Second its been the Pubs on TV day in and day out saying the inane shit. Its the pubs who walked out of negotiations. And its the Pubs who keeping passing things the polls say they shouldn't.
So right now, they are pretty much up a creek.

Why have I never seen Kristen Kreuk naked? Or any of the ladies from Smallville for that matter? Isn't that the only reason it exists? Because the show isn't any good at all, so that's not it.

There seem to be more people wandering in and tossing off points that were dismissed hundreds of posts ago, and then the regulars in the thread angrily dogpile it, and then we spend another page rehashing stuff.

The dems have been like: hey, let's do a thing. We need to raise the debt ceiling. And that's been their message all along. But it's not about the democrats. If it were, they would have lost already like they always do. The Republicans have backed themselves into a corner. Their rhetoric has been interpreted by the public as "raising debt ceiling = irresponsible". And when it doesn't get raised and the dust clears from that, it's going to be their heads.

The idea that the Republicans would be unable to spin it such that their base etc... see this as the Democrats fault is completely insane*. But I think that's a separate question to the fact that they realise they're riding a tiger. It's possible they're at least sane enough to see that this is headed for disaster, but no way in hell they'll take the blame for it.

The idea that tea party voters will see what happens and not see it as the fault of democrats is silly.

Really hard. The consequences for this will be almost immediate, and there'll be no time for blame-shifting. The narrative Republicans built has been one of downplaying the risks of not raising the ceiling, and that works fine when your constituency doesn't really understand how much they rely on government, but they will. And it will be painful.
The Republican base wants them to not raise the debt ceiling. The Republican base has gone so crazy that they won't be happy till we live in their Randian paradise. So fuck the Republican base.

The only people who are against raising the debt ceiling are people who do not understand what it is.
Which is a disturbing and frightening number. What was it, 49% as of the last poll? Nearly half of Americans are in favor of an obviously suicidal policy decision?

I mean honestly I'm ready to just ride this nuke all the way down.
Honestly, I think the only way conservatives in this country are going to wake the fuck up is if they absolutely get what they want, all the way to its logical conclusion.
Of course, that'd, you know, be bad, for pretty much, well, everybody.
But, fuck it. They want to watch the world burn? I've got a lawn chair and some popcorn. Let's do this.

The polls are irrelevant. 49% are against it because they were asked to have an opinion, and saw the elite and media they identify with saying "No" and they said no. An understandable phenomenon. People don't really understand economics, and rely on public discourse and politicians to form their opinions.
Getting fucked in the ass is another way to form opinions, and everyone should be getting a good education soon.

So, in my home state of New South Wales the Liberal* party has just taken office after well over a decade of Labor Party rule.
This morning it was announced that they would renege on their promise to keep ethics classes as an alternative to scripture lessons** and capitulate to the demands of Fred Nile of the CDP* lest he and his party use their senate votes to torpedo bills capping salary increases for public servants to a new, even lower, low (with some paternalistic provisos attached). Fred Nile also demands repeal of laws allowing Gay adoption, the ban of alcohol advertising and making it illegal to own pornography. I don't THINK he's getting either of the latter, but the former, maybe.
We can't have that, the precious fight to reduce worker rights must never be interrupted. So, of course, the Tories, true to form, as ever, capitulate to the religious extremist so as it further their regressive economic policy. Yaaaaay.
* AKA the scum of the earth - they're our Republicans, and are not liberal in any sense that you in the US would recognise.
** Australian public schools are required by law to allow access to religious instruction for one hour per week. Should a child/their parents opt out of the lessons, the policy, in the past, has been that they are unable to have anything taught to them and so they just sit in the playground or something. So, the secularists have suggested that rather than have them sit around playing tiddlywinks perhaps we should offer secular ethics classes. Which have been a huge success everywhere they were piloted - very popular and a damn sight better than the alternative. This has been strongly opposed by almost all religious groups within Australia, and NSW in particular.
*** Fred Nile, leader of the Christian Democratic Party, who lists amongst his political achievements his tireless protest of the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and the exposure of witchcraft in public schools. Below even the Liberal Party on the rung of worthwhile human beings, tied with Family First as the worst thing to happen to Australian Politics.
