The word "Jew" comes from a shortening of the name of the ancient land of Judea.
In fact, if you wanted to get REALLY technical, Jews are ONLY a race, and you could reffer to the religion as B'nai Yisrael, or the the Children of Israel. If that sounds too cultish for you, Israelites would do.
There's no Jews in the Torah, just the Children of Israel.

Yeah, my grandfather prefers to call himself a Israelite rather than a Jew. He seems more intense about it than any of us or his children. I have only stepped foot in Israel once and that was to vist my grandparents on my mother's side before they moved.
All of them still have Israel Passports and my grandfather and his friends, which includes a Rabbi, come over and discuss the state of Israel today. I don't pay much attention to it but the scare me soemtimes with the talk that they should have never given land back and all. I just get uncomfortable and go away.
I am not Self-hating, I just don't like the level of war they talk to. My great-grandfather tought my grandfather to shoot and both bought guns to defend themselves with in 1948 after Israel was created. He joined the army and fought in the Suez Canal conflict, the Six Day War, the War of Attrition and was a reservist in the Yom Kippur War. He came to North America in 1997 when my parents decided to live here. He came here with my grandmother because both of them wanted to be near thier families and none of us were going into Israel, though my cousin, who I talked about, when in the air force.
He has some sense of superioity but tells great war stories.
