So, I remember hearing from somewhere that in this movie, Robert DeNiro plays a gay airship pirate. That has to be the single best role in American cinematic history.
I also vaguely remember hearing that this is an adaptation of some fantasy IP, so I'm surprised no one's started a thread yet. Opens Aug. 10th in the US. I know very little about it, so any information/discussion/hopes/fears would be appreciated.

Gaiman and Del Toro (of Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy fame) are working on a film of one of the Death spinoffs from that universe, Death: The high cost of living, I think. Hopefully if that does well it'd open the door to Sandman films. (Although to be honest I can see them working better as a serial rather than being crammed into a few films personally.)
Yeah, I'd much rather see Sandman as an HBO series (like they were supposed to be doing with Preacher, last I heard) - they could do a season on Preludes & nocturne, maybe a season on Doll's House, one on Season of Mists... ok pretty much a season on each TPB. It'd give them a nice cast of permanant characters (Morpheus, Death, Mervin, Lucien, Matthias, etc.) but also huge potential for temporary guest stars. GOddamnit I'm drooling just thinking about it.
Anyway, yeah Gaiman said that this has changed from the book (particularly the airship bit and DeNiro's character being a crossdresser), but he still had a heavy hand in it and likes the way it turned out. Claire Danes is a friend of his (she wrote the intro to one of the Death books) so I know that at least one of the actors will get their character. Michelle Pfieffer looks great too.
Also, Ricky Gervais.
.. should be nowhere near this. My enthusiasm for the film plummeted the moment I learnt he was in it.

Really, all his books are the same thing. Ordinary people's beliefs affecting the natural order of things ... the spectacular hidden in plain sight ... forgotten gods trying to eek out a decent living. In the Sandman comics, one god was a travel agent.

EDIT: In Stardust, I thought it adorable how the star fell to earth, realized she had broken her leg, squirmed around in the field looking for help and then, exhausted, she whispered to herself, "Fuck."
See funnily enough, knowing NOTHING at all about the source material and viewing that trailer I thought to myself "oh sweet, it looks like it could be this generations Princess Bride!"
So...i dont know if it "failed" to do that in the trailer...since it very much suceeded with my viewing.

Meh. The Death spinoffs weren't that great, and I don't see either of them working too well without a grounding in the Sandman (although if they were going to do it, HCoL makes more sense than Time of Your Life, which involves the personal lives of that lesbian couple from (I think) A Game of You. They show up in HCoL too, but they're not the focus of it.
Also, I agree that there's too much in the Sandman to be crammed into two or three movies, but let's be honest: There's a good bit of filler.
Still, a serial would probably work better.
I agree 1000%. Dream is more interesting than Death and Death can't come across as cheerful unless there's a contrast standing right next to her. I really don't think a chirpy, upbeat personification of dying is going to sell movie tickets.
On the other hand, making a movie about Dream would exhaust any special effects budget. How many millions would it take to make an animatronic unicorn, a CG griffin, and a muppet wyvern that all guard a castle wrapped in fantasy?

I don't know what "MA+ content" is, but it makes me think of NC-17, and I can't really think of anything in The Sandman that would warrant one of those. Most of the really sick stuff in it is only implied.
ennmee: The basic problem I see is this: How do they introduce her? I mean, in the Death minis, they didn't have to. Anybody reading them already knew who she was and her background. But in the movie, what are they going to do? Just have a perky goth chick appear saying she's Death?
Anyway, like I said, I don't think the two Death minis were that great. I much prefer her story in Endless Nights.
The stuff in "24 Hours" was pretty sick... all these people fucking and torturing each other and themselves. Plus some of the stuff that the Corinthian gets up to. Although you're probably right about that not being NC-17; if "Hostel 2" can get away with an R-rating, I really can't imagine what you'd need to do to get an NC-17.
