Hey guys, long time reader/first time poster. Really admire this community and it's friendly attitude, so I decided to join up and contribute my $0.02.
So more to the point, being someone on a limited (read: none) income, I'm looking for a long, in-depth, enormous RPG, that also happens to be free. Suggestions? If people like, I may end up collating a list in this OP, to help people who may be in my predicament
P.S.: I know there are other threads on this forum that deal with free games, but they didn't have much in the way of RPGs, and I wanted this thread to be more specialised.

If you don't mind how old it is, iirc, one of the old elder scrolls games is freeware now.
i mean that might have something for you, if you don't mind those kinds of games
At least, I think that's BGII. Might be Neverwinter Nights. One of those. Or both. Whatever. There's a bundle with both that's cheaper than a couple of pints and a pack of fags anyway.
That free Elder Scrolls game sounds great, I'll definitely look for that.
Man I tell you, I'd buy Diablo or something, but it sucks being in the last year of high school and too busy to work .
I was all
found the link
Bear in mind it is about 13 years old.
It's Neverwinter nights, but yes, seconded. If you can afford to get the packs with the expansions, they were pretty good, but the base campaign kinda sucked.
Since when? or do you mean the (extensive) demo?
Seriously, Minsc and Irenicus from BG2 alone are worth it.
Plus you can get all 4 games for like £10 now.
Betrayal at Krondor is no longer freeware. The free giveaway status was for a short period... now that has been revoked (though if you downloaded then, you can still use it legally, of course).
As an alternative, hey OP! Can you afford $10 a month?
I know it's not "free," but it's cheap, and you can get a GameTap subscription so you can play a shitload of games, including RPGs (also including the aformentioned Betrayal at Krondor). Look into it. ;-)
I'm going to look for that "The Way". For those recommending buying cheap RPG's and playing them, what about somebody like me who has played all the good PC RPG's? I know there has to be good free stuff out there.
edit: I forgot to mention the damn thing is full on open source. There's supposedly tons of addons available for download, although I haven't gone looking yet because it comes with like 8 campaigns.
Well of Souls should entertain you for a good while. Free and online multiplayer.
there was this online one with planets that circled around a star, and you could ally with people... it had a big PA following at one point, if I could just remember the damn name.

Sword of Jade cries out for my attention, but alas I'm on my Mac at work. Nvm, I'll just run it in parallels. Yay.
They have lots of RPGs.

Plus it's incredibly fun.
This list for instance--the one at the top seems pretty interesting, if only for the art.

Those look pretty awesome. Will have to give them a try.
They still have it going on, they got me to try it out last month. Gametap does have alot of good rpgs, including Planescape Torment, which is quite possibly the best cRPG in the history of ever. As well as Baldurs gate 1 and 2, IWD 1+2, and Alpha Centauri, which while not an rpg, can be a huge timesink.
I'm not so sure I could recommend Baldurs gate though, I've tried to get started in it three times and allways get turned off by the horrible interface and (at least for the first few hours) boring plot.
Well, when you say RPG's I assume you mean the type with levelling and such? I can recommend many a good Adventure game, but anyway I'd recommend The Spirit Engine. It's a unique sidescrolling RPG with amazing 2D pixel art graphics and a pretty cool story. The creator is making a sequel but that's not free.

It's a turn-based strategy game released by the 3DO Company in 1999. Gameplay is divided into two parts, tactical overland exploration and a turn based combat system.
There are also two expansion packs; Armageddon's Blade and Shadow of Death.
I grew up with this game and I never got tired of it, look up!

According to the in-game clock I've now sunk 71 hours into it as I'm nearing the end of the storyline. Still got loads of optional stuff to rummage through before I dare face the end boss.
It starts with a pretty ordinary story but I really enjoyed the political intrigue it got into once the action really started.
The balance is just right, too. Haven't had to grind at all and most bosses that at first seem impossible become easy once you figure out a good strategy.

Err, yea... that's the one...
if we're mentioning RPGMaker games, I'll toss out a vote for A Blurred Line. Amazingly good, if short and unfinished (and it never will be).
Too much work for one man I'll tell you.

I haven't played that game in four years, and yet at a names mention I totally second that. :^: I played a whole ton of RPGMaker games back in the day, and that was one of the few that actually had the feel of an RPG that made you level up appropriately, but not as a grind.
YES
It's available for download it from http://www.rtsoft.com/dink/
Nice little action RPG with a twisted sense of humor and mods that can be as or more funny. And longer in one case.

Downloading most of these now. I especially like the look of Sword of Jade, gonna try that one first.
EDIT: Late!
Okay, I like this game so far but even though I found how to set the controls and stuff, I still can't use my usb game pad. It's plugged in and works, but for the game the only thing that responds is the keyboard. Anyone have any ideas on this?
Also, why hasn't the Last Scenario been mentioned?
edit: oh, I guess it has. In the time it took me to write this and find the link.
Uhh, it's been mentioned like 3 times. And my post right above yours was asking a question about it. :P
